At a resent great ball at the Rus
sian Conftt all the ladies appeared
in whit, without any other orna
ment than diamonds, pearls, ami
their own beauty. The Empressher
self was present, and danced in
nearly every dance. The scene is
said to have been marvellously
beautiful. The white room in the
Winter Palace, where the ball was
held, is so large thut,tf,000 persons
danced there with ease.
During the height of the anti
English excitement in Portugal a
new hat styled the "Serpa Pinto''
appeared in the shops, and the Port
uguese adopted the style at once and
bought the hats by the thousand to
wear in honor of their hero and as a
token of defiance of the English.
After a while it caaie out that the
hats were manufactured by an Eng
lish firm, who had reaped a rich har
vest from the Portuguese hatred of
the country. r
Democratic absenteeism is assign
ed as the cause of the loss of another
Democratic member of the House.
A few of the Republican members,
it is stated, knowing that Mr. Cates
had been fafrly elected, absented
themselves in order to Jet ; the Dem

memberswere absent that the op
portunity afforded by the right
thinking Republicans could not be
availed of. It is shameful, if this be
true.
Omaha WqiUI ITeraltl: Speaker
Reed enunciated the dogma that in
a Republican form of government
the majority must rule, and he illus
trated this doctrine bv holding that
when Congress consisted of 108 Re
publican members and 101 Demo
crats the latter had no rights Avhich
the former were hound to respect.
It is a happy thing for the country
