FKDEKAL INTHRFEKKNCE. We do not believe that theRepub licans will dare, press to a conclu sion their scheme for Federal su pervisors of election. So far as the South is concerned the' would not hesitate one moment, "but there are other things and sections to consid er. The same law which applies in the touth must also apply toNorth- j em and Eastern and WesternStates, and there the people will not sub mit to" it. If it can be arranged so that the law may be enforced only in the Southern States the bill will certainly become a law. IBut just there lies the difliculty. There are some Republican newspapers up North that do not wear a muzzle and they are not slow, even now, to protest against the iniquity of the measure. As the Charleston Xcii's-cuid Courier says, it is not possible to predict the result of the proposed Jegislation, although the dangerous tendency of all Federal interference with the local affairs of the States as such cannot be con cealed. The New York World says that the supreme objection the Lodge bill is that it is "another step in the dangerous direction of cen tralization at Washington." The Philadelphia Times thinks that "the probabilities at present are against its passage," but hopes that the "discussion of the new force bill will go "ahead," for "the better it is understood the more strongly it will be "condemned." The unmuz zled Republican press of the coun try are united m their opposition to Federal interference with the af fairs of the State, while the inde pendent newspapers denounce the Lodge scheme as prejudicial to the cause of good government and de structive of popular libeity. "The special lesson of all such at tempts at partisan legislation to the people of the South," says the Nctr and Courier "is that the South, a quarter of a century after ihe war,, has not le(en wholly restored to the lTnion, aud that .the only sal vation for the South is to stand solidly tosreth er. So long as the Republican party is in power at Washington, the Southern States will be treated as conquered provinces.
