It has helped iargely, also, in the pro motion of railroad enterprise?, hav ing given many millions toward the building fcof the Canadiati Pacific. but the more trackage it has fhe more canal it wants. Sir John Mac donald, the Canadian premier, an nounces that the Government will proceed at once to enlarge the St. Lawrence canals, and will complete the work in three years. On the completion of the new Welland Canal it was determined to pend $10,000,000 to deepen the other ca-J nals. Water ways are not to give away to railroads in Canada. Each mode of transportation has its uses, and, besides, the one serves as a check upon fhe other. Canada's ex perience with canals and railroads is the same as that of New York. The friends of the direct tax bill. pays the Washington Yw-, are be ginning to shoxv anxiety in regard to it. It was the popular opinion that it would have a safe and easy pasage through legislative chau uels. but it appears now to be stuck feomewnere. Six weeks ago it went through the Senate without diffieul- tv, aud has been on the House cal endar for nearly a month. The majority and minority reports are ready and inthehands. respectively, of Representatives Caswell and Oates. The former is exceedingly j nuxious to call it up, but it is hinted Ithat Mr. Cannon and the economists on the uepuuncan. fciuc ot tue House, who are interested in pre venting a treasury deficit, have an anchor fastened to it that will keep it right where it is for some time to come. Speaker Reed is suspected of being in sympathy with the econo mists ou this issue, and it is the sus picion that creates the deep anxiety on the part of the friends of the bill. The ballot reform bill, which has been reported to the New Jersey Senate y a majority of the com mittee having the subject in charge, provides for an absolutely secret ballot, with no marking of the tick ets.
