Republican dispatcher, says the New York S?ar. relate that: "Ohio Republicans are greatly enc-onrH ed" by the tremendous drnlbinuB thev cot throashont the State, in town and country alike. Why they are en co raced" by being: thrashed can'only be inferred from the state nient that the appointment of Dem ocratic officials "left nothing for the Republicans to contest for.V and that ".every Deraocratfcr ward poU tician had his coat off working for recognition." This, no doubt, may have been encouraging to the Re publican workers, as an example of what they should do in the itnpro bableevent" of their ever carrying Ohio again. Another facKTsn id to be of a cheering nature is that the vote was litrhl. But inasmuch as the lightness seems, to have ben pretty much all on the Republican side, it . is a little hard to facy what our Harrieonian neiglibors And in that to chuckle over. The next event reported as bring ing cheer to the friends of the Ad ministration is the election of two Democrats to the Rhode Island Legislature in place of two Republi cans. The consolation and joy" in this affair are derived from the fact that the Republicans cot tired and went home before the voting, so that the Democrats, who were in earnest about electing their men, "won by a trick," It is a great comfort when one i3 beaten to be able to charge the blame on a successful adversary. democrats Know tnis trom exper ience. In the State of New York the journalistic Mark Tapleys are able to find ''encouragement" by a pro cess as difficult as extracting sun beams from cucumbers. . Manning huge majority of 7,300 in Albany does not amount to much, 'because he was "the young men's, candi- i date," and the Republicans "never hud a thought of success, apparent ly." It is indeed a cheerful sight to see the young men supporting an energetic, youthful leader, the worthy inheritor of a great name. But politically it wpuld seem s. that the satisfaction over the spectacle should come to the Democrats and good citizens generally, rather than to spokesmen the smashed Re publican machine. The circumstance that is encouraging to the Re publicans is the fact that they have saved two Aldermen in a Board of nineteen, and have lost only four since last year. Up at Lockport the cheerful feature is that the Repub-. licans have saved a number of ward officers in an election in which the present Republican Mayor has been beaten by the Democratic . nominee by a majority of 277. There is, how ever, solid comfort to be. taken by the Republicans in the proof that the Spring elections in this -State show how unnecessary it is for them to waste any money in the contest of next Fall. But it is in the Indiana reports that the happy faculty of our con temporaries for enjoying funerals in their own family comes out in the strongest light. They assure us that "Democrats gain in the cities and Republicans in the rural dis tricts," but the returns show that "thirty-nine Republicans and 153 Democratic Trustees have been elected." This sraggerer forces the organs to "sing small" by describing the Democratic gains in the cities as large, wliile in ! rural townships evidently those not yet heard fioui "the Republicans have .probably made gains." In President r Hani son's own cify the" Democratic gain is about four thousand, but consola-j tion is drawn frm the facts that j "the Prohibition vote is about thej same as two years ago"; that 'Re publican organizations made little efforts to carry the elections," and that "it is the opinion of the party! leaders that the result will have a better effect upon the party than if there had. been generally large gains." And so it will if the lesson of stinging defeat will induce the President and his advisers to cheek their mad course of contempt for local riglits, and especially to Aban don the desperate design of nullify- ing State laws, gerrymanding the Congressional . constituencies and packing the Electorial College. If, chastened by adrereity, the Republican Administration od Con gress shall return to the paths of constitutional and conscientious government, and eudeavor to con duct public affair for the benefit of: the peopleinstead of the rings, then, 1 in truth, inay even the Republican organs hav reason "to find -encour-fl-einent fortbe country in the via dication Of the American system of --..nm-nt f lia fSr.rinn' altfAdnnc of 1800. :V '.'
