' the mggei: in the wood pilf. The threatened revolt in the col- orcd element of the Republican par- ty in North Carolina against the the Harrison administration party has found an echo and over the border in our sister city. There "a nigger in the wood-pile" there too. One E. M. Brayton is chair man of the Republican Executive Committee in that State. He was a John Sherman man at Chicago and ! na n lln.M'cnn V.oo ,,lpan him the cold shoulder ever since. He is now busy making things unpleas ant for the Harrisonians in the Pal metto State. The office?, it is true, are in the hands of the Harrisonians but the party machinery is in Bray ton's hands and he pioposes to work it for all it is worth. Just how the thing stands there is told in a spec ial in. the Vv York Herald, from Charleston. The correspondent says: ",The wh'te Republicans have overlooked tl.eir brother in. black when the offices, were passed around. Thus far Robert Smalls, the ex-Congressman, is the only colored mau who has received an office of any importance. He got the Custom House at Beaufort as his share of the spoils hut the great mass of black Republicans are still waiting and their patience is still wearing out. They have lost faith in politi cians. There was a day when every black man in South Carolina was a Republican but that day is passed. They were told-that if the Demo crats j ever got into power they would be put back into slavery. They saw four years of Democratic Administration and realized that their rights were as safe and as much respected under Grover Cleveland as they had ever been under Presi dent Grant. They were told that if the Republicans "succeeded in re gaining the control of national af fairs they would receive offices and be treated as a powerful element of the party. They have seen a return of Republican Government, and they realize that they have again played thecal for the monkey in the great chestnut game. Many of them threaten to vote the Demo eratie ticket. Tliey like tho honesty of the Democrats, who openly tell tliem that they will get no offices. The great majority of the voters will remain at home colored at the next election. '"The white Republican leaders realize that they have lot control of the negroes and many of them openly advocete a policy calculated to run off those who still remain faithful. They say they are tired of the persistent negro politicians and will gladly give them over to the Democrats. They can no longer serve the Republicans, and now that they are of no use they are thrown overboard. . "The. better class of negroes who have received educational advant ages, and who are not willing to be pushed aside, are bitter against the Republican leaders, and talk of or ganizing themselves into an opposi tion party. There are many very intelligent young colored men fn this class. They know that they have notlung to expect from the Democrats, but they would vote with them rather than help by their votes to perpetuate the rule of the present Republican Administration in South Carolina. "The Republicans will not put any ticket in the field for the State offices tins Fall, and in all probabil ity will not have candidates in more than two of the Congressional dis tricts. They will not waste their energy on a, hopeless undertaking." xno sianuaKi. "I regard Hood's Sarsaparilla a3 having passed above the grade of what are commonly called patent or proprietary medicines," sard a well known physician recently. "It is fully entitled to be considered a stan dard medicine, and has won this po sit ion by its undoubted merit and by the many remarkable cures it has effected. For an alterative and touic ir lias never been equalled." Prospective Tenant "But I thought that you wrote tome that the house had a wide prospect on the mountains. Be Sure If you have made up your mind to buy Hood's Sarsaparilla do not be induced to take any other. Hood's Sarsaparilla i3 a peculiar medicine, possessing, by virtue of its peculiar combination, proportion, and preparation, curative power superior to any other article. A Boston lady who knew what she wanted, and whose example' is worthy imitation, tells her experience below: Get "In. one store where I went to buy Hood's Sarsaparilla the clerk tried to induce me buy their own instead of Hood's ; he told me their's would last longer; that I might take it on ten days' trial; that if I did not like it I need not pay anything, etc. But he could not prevail on me to change. I told him I knew what Hood's Sarsaparilla was. I had taken it, was atisficdwith it, and did not want any other. IHlood's "When I began taking Hood's Sarsaparilla I was feeling real miserable, ' suffering a great deal with dyspepsia, and so weak that at times I could hardly stand, r I looked, and had for some time, like a person in con sumption, nood's Sarsaparilla did me so much good that I wonder at myself sometimes, J . - - . m a w V and my mends frequently speaK oi n.:r w-es.
