Some experimentsbyProf.Haeckel, of Mftrseilles, show that kola is a drug of extraordinary powers of stimulation. The colonel of a regi nient at Perpignan, dosed with kola made the ascent of Canif?ou Moun tain, 9,137 feet, and felt quite fresh after his climb, which lasted twelve hours. Ho only halted once, and for twenty minutes, and ate nothing. Thel24' Ii regiment last July marched for fifteen and a hsilf hours from ! Laval to Rennes, a distance of 45 miles, and were fresh at the tinish. TheJ walked at the rate of 3? miles an hour. Kola produces a similar effect on horses. The, Independent for last week frives the following as the state of the vote on revision in the 214 Presbyteries of the Presbyterian Church: The num ber of Presbyteries heard from isnow 170. Of these 112 vote for revision, 53 against revision, and 5 do not vote at all. This leaves 44 yet to b heard from. Since The Independent went to press, however, a dozen of these 44 have taken action on the question, nearly all of them voting in favor of revision. This makes it practically certain that the question of revision will come up before the General As sembly, even if it be decided that two-thirds of the Presbyteries must ask for such revision. The 170 Pres byteries reported in The Indepen dents table represented 5,029 minis ters and 652,193 communicants out of the 5,930 ministers and 743,749 com municants of the Church. - Chauncey M. Depew is quoted as making the interesting statement that a majority of about one hundred men whom he can recall as having been famous in Wall street since the war for fortunes made suddenly in j speculative deals, and who have since dropped out of sight, are now life in surance agents. He said he attended an insurance banquet recently, and 73 per cent, of the agents present had formerly been famous as successful Wall street traders. Mr. Depew did not state, what is nevertheless a fact, that manyyearsago he himself made an attempt to establish himself as a Wall street broker. Nature intended him for another capacity, and he was unsuccessful. A friend of his re marked that at that time Mr. Depew, little dreaming what was in store for him, was broken-hearted at his non-success, and considered his career ruined. But he went to work in other directions, and soon laid the foundation for his present fame. - It sterns hat though the oyster is one of the most powerful creatures known, for its weight, it isn't so strong by a good deal as the common limpet, "and the Venus verrucosa, a Mediterranean cokleshell, beats the limpet. A distinguished naturalist of Brighton, Mr. Lawrence Hamilton, who sets the Venus verrucosa's strength at 2,071 times its weight, says: "At FolkUone, by means of accurate appliances, I found that the common seashore limpet, wh'ch, without its shell, weighed a fraction le.vs than half an ounce, required, when pulled according to its plane of adhesion, a force exceeding sixty two pounds to remove it from its grip upon the local rock, or upward L of 1,9S4 times its own dead weight. Taking the atmospheric pressure -At 14,7 pounds to the square inch, this would account for 35.28 pounds, or little more than half the power exer cised in the air by this sea snail, which, acting upon immersed objects in the water, would, of course, have pulled a much greater weight than that of 62 ponnds, The force required to open an oyster appears to be l,319Himes the weight of the shell less creature."
