Say, Sir. llainum!
We are reliably informed of an in
stance where four cats sport between
them SO feet. There is an old mouser
at Southport that has six feet, two
extra ones growing out of the knee
joint on the hind feet. She has
three kittens, all alive and festive,
and each carry around eight feet,
instead of four, the limbs all being
perfett from the point of junction.
And this in not all, for it is said that
there is another old cat, of the male
persuasion, in the same town, which
has six feet. And who says now
j that Southport is not on a boom?

The May Delford.
11 'el ford s Magazine for May is . at
hand. It has been here for a week
or more, in fact, but as-Belford is
our favorite monthly we generally
read it all before making up a re
port on its merits. There is an ex
cellent variety in this number. The
opening paper, CongressionalPower
on Education and Elections," by B.
J. Sage, discusses carefully and can
didly, and free from party bias, th
proposed interference by Congress
with the rights of the States, in the
matter of controlling the Congress
ional elections; "Hearts and Coro
nets," by Lieut. Col. J. F. Warbur
ton, is a pretty little story; "Histori
cal Vindication of Secession" is from
the pen of our late chief, Ex-President
Jefferson Davis, and is just
what its title purports an absolute
vindication of the right which did ex
ist for the secession of the States.
Laura F. Hinsdale gives us a de
lightful sketch of Charles Hayarre;
"Brunette Preferred" is a readable
little story; "The Silver Question" is
discussed by Senator Stewart;
"Books Worthy of Note" arc dis
cussed by Admiral Porter and Julius
Henri Brown; "Stronger than
Death" is a pathetic little story of
love and lepers, and "Free Trade in
the United States" is the prize pas
pers on political questions. The
editorials are, as usual, forceful and
vigorous; the poems are by Emma
C. Dowd, H. B. Serrey and Walter
H. Hayne and the reviews, book
notices and humorous departments
will be found as full and as enter
taining as usual. Belford Company,

The Closing Scenes.
The W. L. I. Festival closed in a
blaze of glory on Saturday night,
about 11 o'clock. It was a very suc
cesstul event and we are glad to
know that a handsome sum, approx
imating f 1,000. was the result of the
effort. The baby show late in the
afternoon resulted in favor of Mr.
W. C. Munds' pretty little pinktoed
darling. At nisht there were about
500 visitors and a repetition of the
Fan Drill and of the gymnastic ex
ercises. The Art Gallery was again
the Mecca of all who love the beau
tiful in art as well as in nature and
the refreshment booths and the
other stalls were liberally patron
ized. The receipts, after the neces
sary expenses are all defrayed, will
be turned over to the Armory Fund,
which will then be well en the way
towards the $3,000 mark.

The new plant consists of cold
storage for beer and bottling facili
ties for the same, with new and im
proved machinery for the manufac
ture of all kinds of soda water, sar
saparilla, finger ale and mineral
waters.
The building is of brick, a story
and a half in height and 40x70 feet
in size. The ice house will hold
three car loads of beer, equal to 2;0
barrels or 10,000 gallons, and 30 tons
of ice. The beer is kept here in kegs
until ready for the bottlers, and at a
uniform temperature of 35 degrees.
The office is located on the first floor
and on this there are also the bot
tling machines, all of new and late
designs, and the machinery for the
manufacture of the soda and minerj
al waters. These last are of the
well known manufactory of John
Matthews, New York, and are fitted
with all of the latest improvements.
The capacity of these works is 100
gallons to each charge.
All of the works are run by steam,
a beautiful little marinengine, of
12 horse power, furnishing the mo
tive. The second floor of the building is
occupied for storage of crates, bot
tles, &c There are 1,000 crates
there now and there is room forG,000
in all.
Back of the main building is found
the stables, with stalls for six horses.
This is the number of animals em
ployed. There are four wagons in
requir-
and the
it
others one. The sixth horse, a beau
tiful iron gray, is reserved for buggy
use.
There will be no down-town depot
hereafter but Messrs Adrian & Vol
lers have kindly consented to re
ceive orders and see that they are
promptly handed in.
We congratulate the Portner
Brewing Co. on tne business success
they have achieved here and this
auspicious opening of a new era, but
chiefly must our congratulations be
extended to Mr. E. Kuhblank the
earnest, intelligent and courteous
gentleman who has for three years
past had charge of the business here
and under whose skilful and wise
management it has grown to such
handsome proportions.
In all, the works here give em
ployment now to 17 persons, seven
white and ten colored, and the pros
pect is that more will soon be need
ed. Mr. Kuhblank's staff is enum
erated as follows:
E. Coleman, soda manufacturer;
John E. Taylor, J. Mohr and J. Kel
