For Wilming ton and vicinity, fair, followed by rains. The iee dealers have begun opera tions for the season in earnest, and if there shall not be an abundance of the article in every household, it. will not be in consequence of a lack of places where" it can be bought. We have received the Report of Centennial Celebration of the Alum" ni of the University of North Caro lina, containing the act of incorpora tion, an account ot the Alumni din ner, and the speeches made on that occasion. Today has been the regular day for the colored people to make ex cursions, and the Sylvan -drove took quite a large party of that race, ac companied by a colored band from Kinston, to Carolina Beach this morning. Many of our citizens have already taken their departure for the sea shore, mountains or other fashion able Summer resorts, while many others are delaying their departure until the schools are closed for the Summer vacation, in order to take their children with them. The police donned new Summer straw hats on Saturday last and some of -the force we noticed were adorned with pretty and fragrant buttonhole bouquets. The hats were furnished by. Mr. .1. H. Weil, on Front street, but where the bouquets came from is a inys(miss)tery. The Hibernian Benevolent Asso ciation will .make their annual ex cursion to-morrow, going to Caro lina Beach. The steamer Sylvan Grove ljas been chartered for the occasion. There will be good music for dancing on the boat and at the Beach, and refreshments will be served at city prices. Oh, how happy the school child ren are at the prospect of the ap proaching Summer vacafion, and how anxious they are looking for ward to that time. Who can blame them? After eight months of con stant attendance on school hours and school duties, the prospect of a season of rest and recreation to their young bodies and minds must be a desirable relief and benefit to them. A great many new buildings mostly small and convenient dwell ingsare in process of construction in the suburbs of the city, and that the population- of Wilmington is continually on the increase is made evident by the fact that every house finds an occupant as soon as it is finished. , 44 A stitch in time saves nine," and if you take Hood's Sarsaparilla now it may save months of (future possi" Me sickness. - There's te Dinner Bell! What a clattering and a chatter ing as the children answer the din ner bell and rush into the dining room. Oh! the gratification a good appetite affords as our noon day's meal is set before us. Children's Day. Yesterday being "Children's Day," the services at Grace M. E. Church were devoted to the young folk. Appropriate and extensive 'prepara tions had been made for the occa sion, and as a result the exercises were interesting and were listened to by a large and delighted congre gation. Some of the vocal music was very fine and would have re flected credit upon much older and more experienced singers. ATnought.
