To-day is a legal holiday In. this State, in consequence of which the public offices have been closed for the transaction of business, and there have been no 'Criminal Court proceedings to report. The recent rains must have caused quite a rise in the Cape Fear and Black rivers and their tributaries, so that rafts of timber-and naval stores will have less difficulty and delay in reaching the city. The rainfall last night amounted to .72 of an inch, and the maximum velocitv of wind was at the rate of 22 miles per hour at 3.30 this morn ing. The rain was general through out this section of the State. New Push and Pull Blind Hinges. Locks the blind when opened or closed. Sen ate, and a report reached here last night that his resignation would be made to-day, to take effect July 1st Notwithstanding the rather threat ening aspect of the weather this morning, the excursion to Carolina Beach on the Sylvan Groye this morning was well attended, quite a large party taking the occasion for a trip to the .sea sho re and' a day's recreation. , Wilmington Hook and Ladder Co No. 1 will celebrate their forty-third anniversary 'with a banquet at the City Hall to-night. Active and hon orary' members of the company, offi- eeis of other companies and of the Fire Department and invited guests will attend. The regular business meeting of the Y. M. C. They were caught in Black River and weighed twenty pounds, or an average of five pounds each. Personal. , We had a very pleasant call this afternoon from Mr. A. D. Ward, a prominent attorney at Kenansville, Duplin county. He is in the city on professional business. Mr. J. G. W. Tienken, one of our young German friends, will leave the city tb-morrow morning on the steamship Delaware, for New York, where he contemplates engaging in business. We regret. to have him leave us, but hope thjit he will have the best of luck in his new home and new venture. Last Night' Fire. The alarm of fire at about half- past 8 o'clock last night was occa sioned by the discovery o flames in a bedroom of Messrs. S. and B. Solo mon's dwelling on Market, between Sixth and Seventh streets. The fire was caused bv a window curtain being ignited from the flame of a gas jet, and was extinguished by the neighbors with a few buckets of water. Little damage was done, and that was confined to some of the fur niture of the room. The firemen were promptly at the scene, but their services were not called into requisi tion. A little child was in the room at the time, but fortunately was res cued before the fire reached the bed upon which it was lying. Serious Accident. Henry Jones, colored, who has been the driver of Mr. A. G. Hank ins1 delivery wagon, in attempting to get on the midnight Northbound train on the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad, at Sixth street last night, had the misfortune to miss his foot hold, and the train ran over and crushed his left foot and ankle, ne cessitating amputation. It seems that Jones had intended to go out on that train, and had been to some kind of a party in the vicinity of the accident, where he remained so long he doubted if he would be able to reach Front Street Depot in season, and would risk catching it at Sixth street. After-having his injuries temporarily attended to, he was removed to the City Hospital by the railroad authorities for treatment.
