merce plainly outlines the 'meaning
and intent of the nrojiosed Federal
election law when it says that "the
entire manipulation of the election
of members! of Congress, j and 'to a
great extent of State officials, where
these are voted for at thesame time
as they are! in most communities,
will be placed in the hands of ex
treme partisans owing allegiance
only to one! political organization,
and having no connecction with the
State or municipal authorities, and
to a great extent' independent of
the people over whom they exercise
this control. Their certificate can
give to any man of their choice a
seat in Congress and maintain him
there for a jwhole term, unless after
its organization there should be out
side of the holders of these certifi
cates and tieir allies a majority suf
ficient to expel him' and j install the
rightful candidate." j
The campaign in South Carolina
is not an edifying one. Se&ktor
Wade Hatnpton was at Afken last
Saturday and was howled dow i by
theTillmaites. " It was a shatut und
adlssgracetdtbe. people of the pl ucky
little Palmetto State. There is no
more honorable, honest, tuati losing
and God-fearing soul in jthejVw lole
State than Vade Hampton, the sol
dier, the patriot, tle statesman. The
people who could deride "and insult
such as he are unworthy the name
of men. In war and in peace he has
been the ardent, devoted,-chivalrous
South Carolinian and any howls of
derision hurled at him can but re
bound ori tfie! senseless sneerers.
Wade Hampton needs no defense at
our hands but we must raise a word
in favor of Jone whom we have aU
ways delighted to honor and who
deserves nothing less than love and
reverence from the people of his
own State. The Charleston News
and Courier says that "Gen Hamp
ton went to Aiken at the invitation
of the Democratic authorities of the
county. He is not a' candidate for
office. He is not running against
Tillman in his speech at Columbia
he said distinctly that it would be
improper for hiin to take sides in
the present
contest n South Caro
lina. He was in Aiken as the guest
of the Democracy, to speak to his
people, as he" should speak to them,
and to warn them of the dangers of
division. There was nothing in his
speech to offend even .the most pro
nounced supporter of Tillman. Yet
he: was jeered at und rifliculed and
howled down bv Tillman's followers
Indeed, Tillman j himself insulted
Hampton by telling , him that he
'had better get out of this family
quarrel." Shamej upon the Demo
cratic party if the time has come or,
shall ever come wfaen Wade Hamp
ton can be ordered off the stump by
the slanderer of the State ! Shame
