At about half-past 8 o'clock this
morning a blaze of fire was seen-on
the roof of the house on Mulberry

News of a 8al Accident.
We regret very much indeed to
learn, as we do by telegram received
in the city this morning, of the death
by drowningat the University of the
during the day, the Sylvan
and Passport making extra
trips for the accommodation of the
people. There was a brisk breeze
blowing in from the ocean, which
was doubly grateful to the heated
and perspiring multitude, a nice surf
rolled in for the enjoyment of the
bathers, who disported themselves
to .their heart's content in the
tumbling, boisterous breakers.
There was music for dancing in the
pavilion, j and a good many had the
courage, notwithstanding the heat,
to indulge in this pleasant amuse
ment. . The Germania Cornet Band
was there and gave a delightto the
evening j festivities, which added
much to the interest and pleasure of
the occasion, by playing some of
their ' bet selections in excellent
style. There was also a fine display
of fireworks, which'to those who had
never witnessed pyrotechnic exhibi
tions was an entrancing sight" not
soon to be forgotten. There was no
drunkenness, and the most perfect
good order and good nature prevaiU
ed throughout the dayr No serious
accident marred the pleasures of the
day, although some little excitement
prevailed at-one tfme-.bythenint-ing,
while iu the surf, of a couple of
ladies, but. they were happil ex
tricated from their helpless and per
ilous position before any serious
damage was done, and with the aid
of proper restoratives were soon al
nht again, Capt. J. V. Harper,lof
the Sylvan Grove, was, as usual, on
hand and watchful for the safety
and comfort of all on board, and it
was his strong hand's that drew one
of the fainting ladies from the surf.
