The new.seaside home for sick and needy children, so beautifully and appropriately entitled "The Shelter of the Silver Cross," was formally dedicated yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a large number of ladies and gentlemen, to the noble purposes for which it was designed. Rev. Robert Strange, Rector of St. James' Church, conducted the ser vices, which were beautiful and in teresting Injthe extreme They were opened with that touching and pai thetic psalm of the Shepherd" King, 4The -Lord Is My Shepherd," ren dered by the choir under the direcj tion of Mr. Chas. H. Robinson. Rev. Mr. Strange then read a portion of the 8th chapter of 1st Kings, giving an account of the dedication of the temple by King Solomon; then came other hymns, "Of Thine Own Have We Given Thee," then the dedicaj tory prayers were made, the Lord's Prayer being the first of all, then another hymn was sung, a beauti ful, exquisite thing, telling the story of Christ's love for children, the ser vices concluding with the Apostolic benediction by Mr. Strauge. The Shelter is non-sectarian but is not self-supporting nnd relies upon the kind hearted to furnish means of carrying out its beneficent plans. It relies upon the charitable people of this community for aid and this is something which has never yet failed. It is now fully open; under the kindly ministration of the mat ron, Mrs. Fannie Hays. There are six little ones there now. Theyrise at G.30, breakfast at 7T dinner at 1, sup per at G.30 and after prayers retire at 8 o'clock. Mi CIIONLY; Auctioneer, BY CROXLY Si MORRIS. Big Day at the Beach. Yesterday was a gala day At Carol Una Beach. In" the forenoon a large party went down on the excursion given by the ladies of Bladen Street M. E. Church and we are glad to learn, by the. way, that it wasa ver successful affair and the crowd was reinforced by many on the afternoon boats. The Pussport started doh in the morning witli a very" large crowd of excursionists who wanted to undergo the novel experience of a sail on the briny deep but when she got to the pier opposite the beach Capt. Harper wisely transferred the crowd to his own boat, the " Sylvajh Grove, and sent the Passport back to Wilmington to fill out the' regular schedule. The Grove then took tle party to Southpprt and a few milds to sea. Fortunately, the water w.s smooth and no one suffered fron mal de mer. They were then taken back up the river and landed at Carolina Beach. As soon as tle train reached the beach our country cousins broke for the water with ja yell and many of them donned bath ing suits and took a dip in the waves. Thev had a irood time, and no mis- m V-J ' take. In all there were probably 1,000 persons at Carolina Beach yester day, the last installment of whom arrived here safe last night at 10:?0 o'clock. Selected Heading. The following, list contains bo short and continued stories, poems and descriptions by standard au thors. The third and fourth floors on Nutt street will be fitted for a hand some lecture and music hall, with a seating capacity of over one thous and.' . ' j . ' i- ;The second and third stories on the Front street end will be used ex clusively for the Association rooms. Through; the past; twelve months the committee on the purchase of a lot have worked earnestly and faith fully in behalf of this movement for the young men of Wilmington, and should be unstintedly eommendel fcr their success In securing the pres ent eligible site. Plan after plan have they- canvassed, and have never flagged in their determination to procure a good - and desirable place for this important building. The place, lias many advantages. 1 has a splendid southern exposure and will get the breeze from that quarter, making it comfortable and securing ample ventilation. Every visitor to the city must pass right by It, by whatever road he comes, except the Onslow road. Owing to the large number of young men em ployed in the railroad offices and shops it is very nearly in the centre of population of that cla?s of the community, Ther will be an as sured income from iboth Nutt and Front street ends. Already one of the stores oU Front has been spoken for, and, as before stated, the entire Nntt street end has been leased. . Panforte di Siena, W. D. Howells.
