these will be put in In a day or two.
We notice that our morninjr cotem-

persons. This, according to meas
urements and estimates made by a
friend of ours, is excessive. Our
friend finds the seating capacity,
even allowing for the aisles full of
chairs, at just. 5,334, aind be thinks
that the ushors will do well if they
seat 5,000. . Still, that is a large num

time. It is equivalent to a brigade
of five fnll regiments.

during the week ending Saturday
last tlie temperature has been con

has been favorable for the maturing
of crops. The earlier part of the
week iwas generally clear with but
little Irain, the latter part cloudy
with frequent showers, not sufficient
to do much injury except in a" few
counties as Richmond, Mecklenburg

The Hebrew Now Year.
The year5C51 in the Hebrew caU
endar was ushered in last night and
to-day so many places of business
have been closed that it looks, like
Sunday on the streets. Services were
held in the Temple of Israel last eve
ning and this morning. 1 ;
! The Hebrew New Year has nothing
to do with the Creation. It is not
pretended by Hebrews that it is
comn'iensurate with the first of the
seven days occupied by . the Creator
in evolving order and life out of
chaos. In the command itself it i"
spoken of as the seventh monlfh.
Time js measured in the Hebrew. cal
endar from the new moon, and' the
extra days are added every seventh
year. This makes New Year's Day
a movable feast and tends to mix up
outsiders who do not comprehend
the j way the thing is figured. The
seventh day ts the Sabbath, the sev
enth month the Sabbatical month,
and both are held in high reverence
That is why the openiug of the lat
ter Is proclaimed with so much so
lemnity and the day observed as . a
solemn feast. ..

THE RKFUBMCAN VOTERS OF NEW llANOTER
I-COUNTY:'
As a matter of simple justice lo myself, and
the thousands of hoaes-t- Repiiblteacs of this
county, 3fid fearing that you might be led to
suppose that I am among the instigators of a
f movement to bolt the result of the Republi
can County Convention, I take this method of
Asking you to be not deceived. I have nothing
to do with it, nor am I encouraging any such
course, though men may choose to use my
name In that connection. That" is their busi
ness, and whoever asserts other than what
here state, simply belle3 himself. I assume to
be a Republican of a higher order, or In other
words, one of the loyal stripe. I intend to
vote the ticket, office or no office but hold not
the destiny of others In my hand.
It was well known that I was no longer an
aspirant, for J eglster of Deeds. Though my
frlends.wereurglngmefor the Lower House
and that with a liftlc more zeal than I possess
ed myself, as noon as tho die was cast my as
pirations ceased.. But that doe3 not disguise
the fact that In that convention there was a
very small band of treacherous Judases who
wielded the ballot to their own personal ag
grandizement, and yet to-day they wear that
same deceptive smile, thinking that they are
not knowa. Now, 1 will suggest to my most
worthy constituency of thjs county, and more
especially of Wilmington tewnshlp, that they
send to Republican conventions material who
will not set themselves up as political gods,
and professional mud Elingers, ignoring en.
tlrely the wishes of those who sent them and
entering srracefully into ways that are dark
and tricks that are vain. ,
Yours for fair deal, . -Yep
