This fact indicates a lossof popular confidence in the Repobli can nartv. and a remarkable ac- kuoaledgment of this comes from a quarter where it was least expected. The St. Louis Gtobc-Dcmoctati one of the ablest organs of the Republi can party, owns up in this fashion; The returns from Vermont tell a story to which the wise Republican will be constrained to listen. In the richt and technical sense of the term, the party did not meet a defeat in the tloction. So far as regards the general nsnlt, th Republicans held their ground throughout the' con tet and retain possession of the field. Allnlonir th line the Democratic as sault was repelled. It may, as lias been intimated, justly bes called a Republican victory. Yet it was not a victory which will bring any re joicing to thoughtful members of the party. The old time vigor and en thusiasm of the Green Mountain Re publicans . was absent Apparently tht Republicans won, and the Dem ocrats lost more from force .of habit a habit fostered and hardened by decauenof nnwarying and systematic practice than from the relative! popularity of member of either ticket as compared with those of the other, or from the merits jof the cause which either set of candidates represented. j "it wouiii ue useless as well aa criminal to deny that the situation throughout the country is far! from being .encouraging to the Republi cans. . In all the elections held; with in the past few weeks the party lost ground. It will bo conceded, of course, that therewas no special in centive for the Republicans to bring out their full vote in Vermont The same may be said, however, 6f the Democrats in Alabama, Kentucky and Arkansas, which States ! Gave also voted recently. But in every one of these States in. Republican Ver mont, and . Democratic . Alabama, Kentucky end Arkansas the Demo crats made large gains relatively to Makes the lives of many people miserable, and often leads to self-destruction.
