Mr. David Newman, father of Mr. Martin Newman; Chief of) our Fire Department, who died in New York on Memorial Day, was a gentleman of the old school. He was promi nent in business circles here previ ous to the war and the firm of D. & J. Newman, which did a large busi ness here for many years, and which occupied a part of the identical premises now Newman, the held by Mr. Martin successor to the old firm, was a house of strict business integrity and one which for more than twenty years stood very nign in commercial circles in this city. The firm was not dissolved until af ter the war. Mr.! JosephJ Newmrn was the resident partner, and Mr. David Newman resided in New York and made purchases for the 3rm, although he was frequently a visi tor here. He was the uncle of Messrs.
