TJie Jast number of "The Book-1 seller" gives us ah insight into the admirable system Which prevails in the composing rqoms ot'.the London Times. Compositors eVTnce the greatest desire to obtain employ ment in the great establishment in Printing House " Square : ".None but first-rate compositors, however, stand chance of being taken on, and the list of eligible candidates is generally a pretty long one. Moreover, the Times's system--of raising competent compositors from apprentices, keeps the supply near ly equal to the demand. The Times is the only London daily paper that empjoys apprentices, and this em ployment is iudeed, the chief cause of dispute, between it and the socie ty, though the apprentices are only engaged during the da', principal ly upon advertisements. When a compositor applies for employment oil the Times he is tested, in a room by himself, upon a piece of parlia mentary debate "copy,' which is us ually written in a not over legible style, in abbreviated' long-hand. lit" the applicant can compose sixty li li Vs uiiijiuii in c mil iv wum manlike manner, without 'doubles,' 4 outs,' wrong spelling, or a dispro portionate number of literal or cleri cal errors, within two hours, his name is placed on a register of com petent hands, and he may expect to be called in at the first oppor tunity. "Once engaged, the permanency of his post depends upon himself.- o applicant. over thirty years of age is eligible, and it he tail, upon trial, to come up to the required standard of efficiency, he is paid for his sixty lines and dismissed no one but the manager and himself being acquainted with the fact of his application; so that in no case can injury arise to a Society man from asking foi work on the rimes. In the printing-oflice of the 'lead ins: journal' a capital system prev ails. Men are encouraged in pro vident habits as soon as they attach themselves to the paper. Half a crown in the pound is deducted from the earnings of each regular compositor, pressman, machineman andswarehouseman, which sum ac cumulates at interest during the whole period of his employment, and Js given up to him on his retire ment, and on no account before. A sick fund has been founded by the men, to which every one sub- L scribes, and a surgeon is permanent ly engaged on the stall, and is al ways in attendance or within easy calh Kef reshments of all kinds are obtainable on the premises at near ly cost prices, and the club prin ciple is carried out in every depart ment. Thus, not only are the em ployes cared for during the hours of their working life, but none can leave the Times, after an v number of years' service, without possessing that penny in the purse which we are told is the best friend at court. Could not other large prin tiug offices be conducted on like principles, and with equal benfit to masters and men ?" ' A Series of Murders. From a private letter which we have been permitted to see, we learn that on last Saturday, between 8 and 9 o'clock, a series of most horrible murders were committed near Ome bra Louisiana This horrible outrage i3 shrouded in mystery, ' The facta a3- we learn - them, are" as .follows; The citizens in the neighborhood of : . I had the good fortune to hear her once in Berkley Square. Seeing a large crowd waiting in an expectant attitude just where a fashionable hotel .is located, I in quired the cause, and was told that the mysterious vocalist, the night ingale, was about to show herself. As the clock struck ten, a lady dressed in deep mourning, and hav ing the upper part of her face con cealed by a thick veil, glided for ward and took her place in the cen tre of a space purpose kept clear for her. I decided,, from noticing the beautiful formation of the month and chin, and finely rounded fair throat, that she must bo both young and more than commonly attract ive. She was accompanied by a little boy, also in deep mourning, who carried an open reticule, v Without delay, the nightingale commenced a ballad, and sang with such surpassing taste and feeling as to hold the miscellaneous crowd in mute and wrapt attention. The son: was followed by several favor "ite eecites-fruiir ilrrasV' Allj 8CU dtibtVehligafcjoflA kyLxJajjna, exhibiting the talent and culture onsunl be heWUwr Ami oid-v .. an accompiisnea artisr. jx collec tion was made ; few gave coppers all who could gave silver. The little boy sent in his bag to the liv tel, the balcony ot which was crowd ed with visitors, and it was return ed apparently heavy with precious coin. The sum total must have been considerable, and this I was informed was the usual reward of the hour's work. . When 11 struck, the. unknown stopped her soug, made a slight courtesy, and thread ed hjr way quickly through the crowd. Her real history, I afterwards learned, was a pitiful one. She was the daughter of a celebrated teacher of music, and had been ed ucated for the stage ; she married, againstthe wishes of her parents, a clerk in a postufiice, who, being de tected in the then unpardonable sin of uttering a forged bank note, was tried, convicted and hanged. With three little helpless infants and no means of earning a suflicent income, the bereaved yonng wife adopted tlie plan or making ner nne voice and scientific attainments furnish the means ot subsistence. . lhe close ! of this story is more hopeful.
