We are indebted to the kindness of a friend for an account of the following interesting chain of inci dents : A planter in the vicinity of Ad" ams Kun. on lhursdav inorninjr went on a. drive, with a pack of seventeen hounds. In due course of time, a fine buck was started, and as he came within range of the gun of our friend, he received the contents of both barrels On went the deer, however, into an adjoining swamp, pursued by the whole ex cited pack in full cry. Near by was a negro hoeing cotton, who, wish ing to assist his master (we beg pardon, einyloyer) in providing a fine haunch for dinner, as well as impelled by a natural taste for field sports, threw away his hoe, and ran into the swamp, to prevent the hounds tearing the deer to pieces. As he was making his last heap, which would land him by the side of the " stricken deer," he had tfie misfortune of coining down upon a huge rattlesnake, who, not liking such untimely intrusion, quick as lightning, turned upon the sable invader and struck his fangs through Cuffee's pantaloons into the inte rior aspect of the" middle, third of the thigh. The planter cjame -up almost immediately after, when Cuffee remarked, just as he was about to faint, "On massa R , ratilesnake bite me," pointing to the coiled up monstor by his side. Cuffee was pulled to one side, and a discharge of both barrels of the unerring TVeley Richards made his snakeship shuffle off' that mortal coil. Fourteen rattles gave proof of his age and prowess. Mr. L th-en addressing Cuffee, remarked, " although you are a grand rascal, I shall not let you die in that way;" and instantly taking out his hunt ing knife, cut open the leg ot Cuf fee's snake-pierced pantaloons, ap plied his lips to the wound, and then and there sucked from it the deadly serpent's venom. The ne-o-ro was taken home, in a state of insensibility ; but, although very feeble, Mr. E thinks he will re cover. There are a few facts connected with the relations, past and present, of the principals in this .adventure, which greatly enhance its interest. Cuffee (our norn, de guerr& for this negro) was the 6lave of the gentle man who thus saved his life, until the lower part of our State was oc cupied by the Federals, when he (Cuffee) joined the United States colored arni3r, and by a singular co incidence, was confronted soon af terwards with his late master on a battle-field in North Carolina. Cuffee even shot at him, but missed and was taken prisoner by him ; re leased of 0011186 soon afterwards, when the Confederacy went u up the spout," aud the " Union came in." After the war was over, and peace (so-called) had once more returned to bless (?) our borders, Cuffee, bear ing no malice for having shot at his master, presented himself before him at the old plantation asking to be employed. He was employed, and has been .there ever since. "We commend this story (for every .' word of which we vouch, and, if re quired, will give the names) to our Northern friends, Forney, Greeley,; Stevens, Phillips, and the whole pack of them; and hope they w ill give it wide circulation, as showing what base, selfish, vindictive das tardly fellows iur Southern plsnters are.
