. Wat c ii Stolen. -On Monday
night last, at a certain boarding house
in this city, a man by the name of Charles
Syvester stole n valuable time-piece, be-
ongiftg to a fellow boarder by the name
of David Wing. It seems that on the
night in question Sylvester occupied the
room of Wing, and on leaving it-in the
morning, fearful that he might not be able
to keep a proper reckoning, appropriated
the latter' watch, and then left on a
steamer for New York. A teli graphic dis
patch was immediately sent to the latter
city, and the watch will no doubt be re
covered npon the landing of the steamer.
.The State Council F. of T.
The State Council Friends of Temperance
meets in Goldsboro' next Wednesday, the
6th of October. We learn that Mt. Olivet
Council, of this city, will be largely repre
sented. All the members who are eligi
ble will be requested to be present as del
egates, and it is expected that a majority
of the remaining members will attend.
A letter has been received by members
in this city, stating that most ample pre
parations are being made for the accom
modation of visitors, and the occasion will
doubtless be ot a very
interesting and
agreeable character.
"Wilmington and Fayetteville.
The Raleigh Standard, alluding to the
comments of the Wilmington press on the
lowness ofthe river and the inconvenience
occasioned thereby to our business men,
says : "Fayetteville, and the country on
the upper Cape Fear, suffers much for the
want of railroad facilities; and we hope
the day is not distant when the river will
not be its only outlet. . . : .t -'
'Striving, as Wilmington evidently is, Tor
the trade of North Carolina, we have been
a'little surprised that her enterprising men
have not secured a branch road from gome
point on the Manchester road to Fuyettc-
viile.'
Take Care of the Children.
Much has been said, and. more has. been
written, in reference to the duty of parents
in keeping their children off the public
streets, unless accompanied by some one
competent 'to take care of tluem. ; Some
little children ore allowed to roam at largu
from morning till nigbt, with the excep
tion, perhaps, of the few moments devo
ted to their noonday meal,' without the
least idea "being entertained by their pa
rents as- to their whereabouts. The dan
ger c-i allowing them Buch license is lx.ing
evidenced every day in the number of ac
cidents constantly occurring to children,
arid with which the City press daily teem.
Yesterday a little inpocent on one of our
streets came near, being killed. She had
started across the street, when a horse,
with a buggy, attached, came bounding
round the adjacent corner atta break-neck
pace, and butfor the interposition of a
colored man standing close by, who, rush.
ing to the rescue seiJfed the: babe by the
hand and boro it out ot the way or tne
vehicle, it would assuredly have been
crushed to death..' And what a blow that
death would have been to some fond, but
too indulgent and though tlass parents!
; Conviction and Sentence of a No
torious Horse ThdufI Wo learn that a
notorions horse thief, by the , name of
Henry Edmunson faZia Henry Chase, , for
merly 7 of . "Wayne countyf , was arrested
sometime since in Columbus and upon, his
trial before the last Superior Court of that
county, he was c1onvictednd ; sentenced to
ten years confinement in the State Peni
fentiaryi He is' now in tbefcouhiyjail of
WHMINGTON, N.. C, THURSDAY HORNING, SEPTEMBER 30, 1869.
Columbus,; awaiting the completiofi i of the
penitentiary, wbTg ne will be transferred
to that institution..,. It will be remember
ed by our .readers that this same .scoun
drel was some time since discovered in
possession of a horse which he had stolen
from some one in ; this vicinity, and. a
lively chase ensued beteeri thfr two ferries
on the opposite side otthe river, which
finally resulted in his escape into fBrun-.
swick county. Chase is one of the most' no
torious horse thieves in the country and
his capture and sentence to a rigorous
and lengthy confinement will be a sonrse
of gratification to all law-abiding people.
We. learn that he is charged with -having
stolen, during his brief but most villainous
career, at least fifty different horses, be
sides the , many . minor offences of
which he' has 'been' guilty. ; Thus,
one by one, the transgressors against
law and order in our neighboring coun
ties are brought to the bar of justice and
made to suffer the penalty of their crimes;
and we hope that, very soon, the last one
of the infamous wretches Who liave so
long been preying upon the people of
Robinson,. Columbus,'' and the adjacent
counties, shall be in a Condition to suffer
for their misdeeds.
