The "confidence man" was around again yesterday afternoon in the person of a colored boy, t pparently about 20 or 21 years old, by the name of Robert Graham. He, the said Graham, it seems, mct with an intesely verdant country darkey, hailing from somewhere in Bladen county, whom he had ascertained had a sum of money in his possession, and lie laid his plans to relieve him of it Going up to "greeny"- he proposed to sell him some meat, stating that he had three good sized pieces in his bag which he would let him have for three dollars, Vaa long us it was him." Bladen swallow ed the bait-without a moment's hesitation and produced a live dollar bill. Tbis Graham said he was not able to change ; but, saying he would fix it in a minute, he snatched the five dollar bill and made off with it. The victim pursued the thiefr but he eluded his grasp. The po lice were . put , on his track, however, and in a short time they came up with him, on Front, between Market and Dock streets, and took him into custody. Iu the short time that had intervened ouly about a half an hour between his flight and arrest, he had changed his clothes and come out in an entirely new suit, which shows that he is an adept in the business. When taken to the Guard House he wo? searched and the five dollar bill was found on his person. The meat in the bag, which the preco cious scamp pretended he was going to sell to the country darkey, was like the pig in the bag it was "neither pignor pup," nor anything else. When the victim of this little confidence game was informed that his money was safe, he exclaimed "Thank God!" with a fervency that convinced us he knew the value of money ; and he will probably be a little more careful in future how he trusts it in the hands of a stranger. This case will come up for trial to-mor- TOW. A Rumor. A rumor was in cir culation yesterday to the effect that two Spanish gunboats were laying off the In let, awaiting the departure of the Cuba, with the intention of pouncing upon and capturing her. The Harnett Base Ball Club. We learn that a meeting will be held at the "Clifford House" on Wed nesday evening next, at about 8 o'clock, with the intention of reviving the' above named Club. There is no single city in the country of the size of Wilmiogtou, that we are aware of, that caiinot boast of at least two or three base ball clubs, and we are unable to see why the vounz men of Wilmington should be behind those of other cities in such rational and healthy amusements. Cold weather is coming on the Harnetts will succeed in re-organizing on the night named. Committed for Trial.
