New subscribers are coming in by every

WILMINGTON, N. C.
Dead. The colored man, Sandy
Sykes, who was struck down by a stick ot
wood in the hands of Bacchus Quince, at
Point Peter, opposite this city, Tuesday
morning, and to which reference was made
in our yesterday's issue, died from his
wounds on the same night, without hav
ing spoken a word, we learn, from the
time he received the fatal Wow. A jury
was summoned yesterday morning by
Coroner Allen and an inquest held over
the body in the afternoon, but the late
hour at which the jury concluded" their
labors prevented us from gaining a report
as to their verdict, which, however, can
easily be surmised.
Smoking Tobacco. We tender
our acknowledgments to Messrs. Nor
throp & Cumming for a very liberal
sample of the "Eureka" Spanish flavored
Dnrham Smoking Tobacco, for which this
enterprising firm are agents. This to
bacco took a premium at the late Fair,
and is decidedly the most excellent brand
of smoking tobacco now manufactured, in
our opinion; and as people will smoke,
Rison's Antidote to the contrary notwith
standing, we advise all to purchase the
Eureka.
Parties wishing to purchase cau get

Mysterious. -The . Captain of a
vessel which arrived here yesterday morn
ing reports that on Tuesday night, about
11 o'clock, when passing the plantation
ot Col. Jno. D. Taylor, in Brunswick
county, opposite Big Island and about 9
miles down the river, he heard proceeding
from the shore the most agonizing screams
and cries for help, the voice sounding as
il it came from an elderly female. The
Captain hailed and inquired what was the
matter, but received no response, and was
compelled to leave without being enlight
ened as to the mysterious sounds. The
cries were evidently from some one in the
direst distress.
A Crazy Darkey. On Tuesday
evening last, while the family of 3Ir.
Littleton, living on Queen street, were sit
ing at the supper table, a colored g'rl by
the name of Hannah, who is subject to
fits of temporary derangement, and who
at the time was suffering under one of her
periodical attacks, jumped the fence inter
vening lietwcen the street and the house,
hurst the door open and rushed in among
the frightened inmates, acting in the wilk
cst manner inaginable and cutting up
capers which are only characteristic of a
raving maniac. Frightened out of their
usual equilibrium and not knowing what
to do with the frantic girl, the family call
ed in Constable Hill (coL,) who happened
in the vicinity, and he finally succeeded
in removing ber from the premises, very
much to the relief of the inmates. After
carrying her a short distance the officer
met the parents of the unfortunate girl, in
to whose bands he delivered her. She
was then suffered to recline upon the grass
where she lay panting for a few minutes
arid then came to her right mind suffi
ciently to be taken peaceably home.
The Festival. The Festival
given by the ladies ot Front Street M. E.
Church opened last evening under the
most favorable auspices. The weather was
delightful, and the few moments which
our pressing business engagements per
mitted us to remain in the Hall showed ns
a large crowd of ladies and gentlemen in
attendance. The decorations and general
arrangement of the Hall displayed much
taste, while the different tables were liter
ally filled with fancy articles of all de
scriptions, splendid iced cakes, confection
ery, &c, &c. There was also a stand
where ice cream was kept for those who
desired it, and another where oysters were
served in different styles to those who are
fond of the delicious bivalves. A small
arbor which enclosed a miniature lake, on
the bosom' of which rested a miniature
boat in which sat a miuiature figure of
The Lady ot the Lake," attracted much
attention. The first4 night of the Festival
has established the' fact of its success, and
we hope to-night the ladies may be re
warded for their 'labors in so worthy a
cause by a still larger and more remunera
tive assemblage of the liberal-minded and
liberal hearted people of our city.
Escape of Prisoners.-Two color
ed prisoners belonging to the "cbainfgang,''
by tbe names of Andrew ' Ellis and Wil
li m Murphy, made their escape on Tues
day and have not since been heard of. It
seems they, with'the' other prisoners,
were engaged in hauling sand, when seiz
ing an opportunity, they broke and run,
an agreement having .no doubt been pre
viously made between them to that effect,
and made such, good time that it was
found impossible to recapture them.
Murphy is tbe individual who was over
hauled a week or two since with a varie
ty of articles in his possession "which he
had stolen from the establishment of
Messrs. Williams & Murchison, for which
he was fined $50 and costs, andjvas also :
tovbe placed- under a bond of $200 when 1
the city was through with him to answer
to the State for the same offence. He has
a wife at Mr. Nixon's place on the Sound
and is probably lurking in that neighbor
hood. : Ellis was under sentence for disor
derly conduct, for which be had been
fined $20 and cott.!'-'.t ':, ;
