The case of Jack Hooper, arrested on Thursday last on the charge of committing an assault on the person of Caroline Hall (col.,) came up before Justice McQuigg yesterday. We learn that a Col ored convict, by the name of Andrew Wells, escaped from the Workhouse on Tuesday night last and has not yet been recaptured. Wells was convicted for stealing a cow, at the last term of the Su perior Court, and senteoccd to one yenr's imprisonment. Another Inquest. Coroner Elkanah Allen, having been duly notified of the death of the white woman noticed in yesterday's Star as having been found dead in her bed at Burgaw, in this coun ty, will proceed to hold an inquest over the body to-day at 12 o'clock. Have Arrived.; We learn that Rev. II. F. Wood, the new pastor of Fifth Street M. E. Church, with his family, has arrived and taken up his permanent res i(lcnc for tho- present . eclesiastical year. Mr. Wood will preach in his church to-day at the usual hours for service. Released. Cornelius Riddick, who was arrested on Friday, charged with " fleecing1.' another colored man to the tune of .$90.50, and whose examination was announced to take' place before Jus tice McQuigg, yesterday morning, at 11 o'clock, was released from custody, no one appearing to prosecute in the case. Any person not familiar with city life, would be struck, of a Sat urday evening, with the immense throng which crowd the sidewalks on Market street. Coroner Elkanah Allen-held an inquest over the bodies of Jamts Murphy and James Nix (who died at the Workhouse near this city, the for mer on Friday and the latter on Saturday last.) at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The verdict of the juries were that they came to their deaths from natural causes. Murphy was 40 years old and Nix 83, and both belonged in this county. Removal of Disabilities.
