Between 8 and 9 o'clock on Tuesday night, at the wharf near the foot of Dock street, a colored man by the name of Cetus Herring,' belonging in Elizabeth township, Sampson county, and about 25 yearsold, fell from a raft and was drowned. It seems that the unfor tunate man had just arrived at the.wbarf, accompanied by his father-in-law and oth ers, when attempting to "take up" his raft at the wharf his "head came in con tact with the stern of a vessel and he was knocked into the river. Herring is repre sented to have been an' expert swimmer, and he struggled manfully to reach the raft, but it is supposed that he became ex hausted from his efforts to escape the suc tion of the vesuel under the stern of which he had been drawn.
