I.F.T THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE BE We seethat a public meeting has been calfef ?ff wifkeco'tinty to give expression to the sentiments of the people on the J militia bill and the expected determination of the Leg ist ure to hold over for four years. ' We consider this action eminent ly proper; and would suggest that a similar meeting ' be held in ' New Hanover county at an early day. These meetings should be held ir respective of .party, or color. For while there may be a difference of opinion (viewing it as a party meas tu e) as to the militia bill, we can see no gootleGn why;, men of all parties may not meet on a common ground of opposition to the iniqui tous scheme for retaining the Lesris lature in their present position two years beyond the period for which they were elected. We have yet to hear the first vo ter de&arebatjvin the State elec tion, he voted for members of the Legislature with the understanding that they were to hold their posi tions four years. True, an effort was made to so1 muddle the Consti tution on thjsj point as to make it a matter of donl?V wnether two or four years was the legal term for which the first Legislature was elec ted. But nothing is clearer to our mind than the conviction that it is the plaj inteatanil.ineaning of the Constitution that the legal term of ofiice ofjmembera of the present Legislature is tied, no Jour years. The effort of the Convention to change a reality ipto a doubt signal ly failed, notwithstanding the posi tion of the present Legislature to the contrary. But why should any honest Re publican object to a new election? Does he represent a Republican constituency .. And is he afraid to go before thex'people of his county on the record he has made as their representative , at . Raleigh ? Is he not willing to give an account of his stewardship aj&dto abide the ver dict of WgJplj;at ,;the polti? Does he a3mit tnl there" has been bribery, and corruption, and extrav agance in the body pf which he is a member?' . Ti'lXiheHcleetloD be cause it is our right. If a Republi can, or a Liberator a Conservative, or a Democratic member cannot de fend his record to' the satisfaction of his constituents, let his place be filled by another. . It is a fihaine: and , a disgrace to any representative of, the people to be forced tbrfldmitfthaV he fears the verdict of his - constituents 'at theT polls. . , Every Senator: and Repre sentative of our. They must show that they have perform ed their duty, or retire to the shades of private life. So far as the people are concern ed, this-is no party matter. , Jt is not as Liberals or Radicals, it is not as Democrats or Republicans, that they view this - important, question. They simply demand that their rep resentatives shall be governed by principle and right. They demand that men elected to public office for two years shall not of their own will extend the term to four years. The question is already virtually settled in favor of a four years' lease of power unless the people of the State take early and decisive action. Let them, then, exercise the right of assembling together, and let them denounce the monster fraud which their representatives now threaten to perpetrate.- Now is the time.for action, while the members of the Legislature are with their constituents. A LITERARY CURIOSITY. We have often had occasion to reproduce specimens of journalistic literature from the Memphis Ava lanche We now beg leave to sub mit the following, not because it refers to Mr. Stanton, but merely to show the "style" of our brother of the Avalanche. Says the afore said brother; A bad man has gone to his long' ac count. A villain has shuffled off this mor tal coil. A despot has kicked the bucket. There was great "rejoicing.: in Pandemo nium yesterday. Since that eventful day when Adam and Eve. manufactured clothes out of fig leaves, there has beea many large gatherings in hell and on earth. But the cavalcade that turned out in the infernal regions to greet E. M. Stanton, who died yesterday, was, oa all probability, the largest that ever paid tri bute to a congenial spirit. Stevens bad been awarded the premium for being tbe biggest sinner in all purgatory, and be is no doubt now jealous of Stanton who he knows will put in for the medal, with ft good proepect of winning it. That mawkish ' Bentimemtality which would throw th,e mantle of oblivion over, the misdeeds of dead rascals, cannot be ob served in chronicling the death of E. M. Stanton. The most exquisite tortures served Stanton enjoyment. The tyranny of Tiberius was forgotten in bis enormi ties. He reveled for several years in tor menting all over whom he had power; but when he offended heaven and earth by hanging au innocent woman like a dog, God visited him with Ilia righteous an ger, and since the consummation of this atrocious deed Stanton's physical system commenced decaying and breaking up, and without , a single tie on earth, desti tute of all beliet in theCbriatiao.reljgioa, he died, and a little soul steeped in sin went to the deviL In nature he was re vengefaJLaad malignant, and .so stubborn la opinion,, .that be;rarely changed his view or, relinquished a purpose. lie was as remorseless and cruel in disposition as a Camanche Indian, and joyously- and without a shudder would have tunied the Southern people over to : massacre, and their homes to desolation. He ''was -serene, not from philosophy, but from, tem perament and torpor. He belonged emi nently to the animals . known as : cold-, bloods. No impulses evertirred the fee ble and sluggish currents of his moral or mental nature. To call him a brute woald be a libel upon the dog." Of humanity ho was destitute. He was servile; he was cowardly. The manner of his death shows the finger of retribution.. He' inMgeTcd for blood, for 8 position that -would ena ble hirn to bedevil a defenceless people. A President as mean and malignant as himself appointed him United States Su preme Court Jodge. This power caused the fiend to burst into wild, demoniac laughs. But that God who would not permit the builders to. occupy the impi ous tower on the plains ot Shinar, smote the! unetious scoundrel so. that he died. Nearly all the" conspirators against the life of Mrs. Surratt have been blotted from the world they disgraced. Conover was sent to the penitentiary, and Andrew J ohnson was ,'consigned to private life. Holt still lives, but still prays for death! ..S.tanton has gOBe, and Holt will goon fol low, for not more certainly is he burned who puts his hand in the flames, than is he punished who commits a moral wrong The wicked man's "sins will find him out.".
