Cacoht in tiik Act. A gentle
man informs us that a thief entered bis
premises about 7 J o'clock last night and
killed four fine large Brahma chickens,
which he had just purchased. lie was
discovered before he had time to get off
with them, by one of the servants, whom
lie frightened into silence by threats of
valence, but just at that moment the
gentleman happened to go to tho door and
the thief, who proved to be a negro
'Jumped the fence and beat a 'hasty re

"Thieves 1rkak Through and

priif ted a quantity of bed-clothing and

wi re frightened off before completing their

the roiuu in a manner whicli proved that
they did not carry off all they intended.

We learn lrom a gentleman. from Shoe

at about 2 o'clock on the morning of
Saturday, the 8th inst, the store of Messrs.
O. S. Hayes & Co., of that place, was dis
covered to be on fire, and before anything
could be done the entire juilding, with
its contents, was completely 'destroyed,
the family barely bavins time to escape
the devouring element. Attached to the
store was post office, -Mr. - Hayes being
Postmaster at that point. This, of coarse,
with its contents, with the exception of a
package of money in a safe, which, was
not injured much, was'cntirely destroyed
From a letter which came to hand
since the above was -written, we learn
that the loss Messrs. of Hayes & Co. is es-

the work of an incendiary. r .

; J ".Remarkable lE3CAPE.4:It will be
remembered that on last Saturday a week
ago, a colored man by the name of Schuy
ler Hooper, who was employed in assist
ing on 'the wrecked steamer Lucille, got
into a serf boat for the purpose of bailing
her out, and while so engaged 'she broke
from her ; fastenings nnd drifted out
through the Inlet into the open sea. Some
hopes were entertained for a few days that
he might be picked up by a passing ves
sel, but as time passed and nothing had
been heard of him, the opinion began to
be generally entertained that he ' had per
ished. It was, therefore, a source of no
little surprise as well as gratification
when intelligence was received on Sunday
morning last thai the lost boy had finally
turned up and was alive and well. It
seems that the boat, which was a very I
staunch one, after drifting . about, com
pletely at the mercy pf tbe winds and
waves, for about three hundred miles' fi
nally went ashore on Cape Lookout beach,
where he was picked up in a very exhaust
ed condition and carried to Beaufort. Tbe
Collector at Beaufort thereupon wrote, at
the suggestion of Hooper, to his employ
ers in this city, requesting them to send
him Jjome money and : clothes. : This is
one ot themost remarkable adventures on
record, and should inspire the subject of it
with devout thankfulness to the Overru
ling Providence that preserved him in the
midst of so m afty dangers and perils;1' and
.finally brought him safe to land.
. Quick Run. The Steamship
Pioneer arrived at Ihis city yesterday from
Philadelphia, having made. the run in 49
hours and 5 minutes from wharf to wharf,
waiting at the Bar 4 hours and 20 minutes
for thetidel This is the best run ever made
by that splendid Steamship.

Naw Kut Cophty, Va., April 1, 1869.
Messrs. Johitstok A Lahohorbbs ' . '
Gentlemen The very high character of tho
testimonials attesting the merits of your
"Vegetable Preparations Nolandine," in
duced me to test your NOLANDINE PROP
ER " in a very desperataxjase of Hydrothorax
(aropsy of tne caesi,) cppumou w iw auium
dropsy of the abdomen). The usual reme
Hes known to our profession had been most
skillfully adxtolnistered without producing
gntiftin&tMi ftfCactn. The discsases yielded to
the action of your u NOLANDINE." I very
gratefully state that ray patient is nowenjoy
fiig the blessings of a restoration to good
health, and now, four months since adminis
tering your Nolandlae, there Is not a symp
tom of recurrence.
1 had eeveral opportunities of testing the
merits ofyour "NOLANDINE " for CHILLS
AND FEVER, in cases which had resisted the
usual remedies for months, and had the satis
faction to see them entirely broken and per
manently removed after a course ofyour No
landine. X know that I wfli incur the displeasure of
Bomo of the profession by departing from its
usages ; bnt candor and iacts compel me to
can attention of my professional brethren to
tne invaluable properties ofyour preparation
nittrtut. chat; Tireindlca will not deter them
from their nse. I have : found the action of
your Nolandine on the liver and secretions
more than equal to calomel, which is an addi
tional recommendation.
Very respectfully,
A. G. JONES, M. D.
