Serious Accident from the Explosion
of a Can of Kerosene; r- r
Yesterday evening, about half past 7 o'clock",
while the inmates of th "Academy of Our
Lady of Mercy" were iu the chapel arpruyers,
a colored woman, by the nme of Bose Jen
kins, employed on the premises, went into the
kitchen and was in the act of filling a lamp
from a can of kerosene;. enVthe can took
fire, either from the stove or from the burning
lamp, find exploded, mating a report jiKe ine
firing of a gun. The clothing of the woman
took fire when she ran out of the kitchen and.

distance of about seventy-five yards, the fire
by this time blazing so high that some gentle
men a few squares off, when they first discov
ered her, were under the Impression that it
was a burning tar barrel. - Her screams in the
meantime attracted a. large crowd and the fire

ket and rugwhlch were wrapped around her.
The unfortunate woman was very badly burn
ed, especially from the waist downwrd. Her

the fine display made by . the Senior class- in
Mathematics. .' General Colston, in the pres
sence of several gentlemen, themselves compe
tent mathematicians, carried the class through
a searching, analytical examination of several

dication of the careful training and thorough
instruction given at the Academy. The young
gentlemen havjs a right to be proud of their
handsome achievements in a branch of study
