By change in advertisement it will be seen that the Grand Distribution of 'real estate at Memphis has been postponed to August 31st. lu this connection we take occasion to say that, from bur own knowledge of Messrs. Pissmore & Ruflio, the managers, and the re- pi'eseutation of disinterested parties, we feel satisfied that the whole scheme will be con ducted with perfect fairness. To Keep Flies Off Batter. An experienced and accomplished houses keeper inlorms us that flies may be kept out of the butter-plate on the table, by the 6imple and novel expedient of planting in it a thin slice of bread, cut column-wise and inserted in a perpendicular position. Whether the bread sfaresthe flies away or not,: we cao not say, but it certainly keeps them off. We have seen the experiment repeatedly tried with success. W., C. A R. Railroad. At the meeting of the Directors of the Wil in iu to 11, Chuilutte & Rutherford Railroad Company, held at Charlotte a few, days since, Mr. Silas N. Martin resigned the Presidency of the road, on the ground of ill-health, and M. Cronly, Esq., of this city, was chosen as liis successor.'' : -' 'r The friends of this great Improvement will rtijret the loss' of. Mr. Martin's ability, bat they will find in Mr. Cronly a gentleman of extraordinary financial skill, untiring energy, and an ardent attachment to the road that will iall forth his best efforts in its" behalf. Crops, Ac., In tbe West. We are advised by one who has just passed throuffh the routetof Charlotte via the Wil wingtou, Charlotte and Rutherford Railroad, that ih all the sections along the line the crops are in fine condition. Rain has fallen in suffi cient quantities to ensure the growth of corn and cotton. In Anson, Union and Mecklen brg counties, in this State,; the prospects were never finer ; the planters "have generally planted more corn than usual, and. the yield is b promising that there seems to be no draw back to the prospect of confortfor the people of North Carolina, at least for theomlng year. In Charlotte, he assures us, plenty abounds. The deposits in the different banks are large, rt,achinr three quarters of a million of dollars. John Self, andjAmos Lucas, both col., and ;i t the latter an old "offender, were sent to the Work House yesterday.; . We learn that Bishop Lynch, of South Carolina; passed through this city Thursday night, en route tor New xork. ; : Mayor Martin, who has been absent on a short visit to the West, returned to this city on Thursday evening. The 3ounty Commlssipneps were In session again yesterday.but did nothing further than to revise the tax lists. They meet for that purpose again to-day. ; The city carts will hereafter be exclusively used for cleaning up the city. While so much building is going on the city force Is taxed to to its utmost to keep the Hris out of the way.l ' -; Tbe members of the Howard Relief Com pany were out with their beautiful steam engine, fhe "A. Adrian," yesterday, for parade and practice. .We noticed that the "Rankin" was also being exercised. t . ., ... .. . - : Only 10 interments are reported for Pine Forest Cemetery for the month of June, of which number 4 were adults and 6 children. This makes a total of 16 ieterments for the month, in Oakdale and Pine Forest combined. The Fayetteville Eagle learns that Tom. Lowrcy, one of the Robeson outlaws, was killed about a week or two ago, and adds that he was certainly wounded. We heard a re port to the same effect a week or two since, but failed to trace it to a reliable source. i 1 :i . On Thursday night a precocious colored youth by the name of 8ylvester Price, who has served ffterm or two in the Work House, was caught by a gentleman in the act of stealing a qap belonging to him. The boy was turned over to policeman Fred Williams, but on the way to the Guard House, he suddenly gave the officer the slip, and made his escape. A New Tillage Springing; into Exlst- ence. :; '. ' A su'rvey for a village at Faison's Depot, in Duplin county, on the line of the Wilmington andiWeldon Railroad.was made about the 15th of last month, and a sale of lots under the di rectlon of Col. S. L. 'Fremont, Engineer and Superintendent, took place on the 1st day of July. We learn that thirty-One lots were sold for $5,679, which is considered a pretty fair 8ale. j They are still selling business as well as building lots for private residences. Faison's is one of tbe prettiest as well as wealthiest sec tions on the W. & W. Road. A thriving vil- lage Is anticipated. The owners of the land are determined to make it what it should be, a handsome and pleasant place. They are will ing to donate land to any or all denominations who may desire to build bouses of worship there.' Already $1,500 has been subscribed for the building of an Academy. A large. lot was presented to P. Murphy, Esq., of this city, who proposes at an early day to build a brick ho tel wjth twenty rooms. A railroad from this point to Averysboro' is spoken of, and no doubt is entertained that it will be construct ed in the not remote future ; or, if a road steamer should be deemed practicable, the money for the purchase of a steamer can be raised within ten days from the time it Is moot ed. Faison's is about 63 miles from this city, is healthy, pleasant and with first rate water, and can easily be made one of the most desira ble places in this section of the State. Medical Association. 1 Enterprising medical gentlemen of this city and county have held several meetings recently here for tbe purpose of organizing themselves into a more vital Association. They have al ready, progressed to the laudable extent of adopting a Constitution, and on Monday even ing last elected permanent officers. They pro pose to call themselves "The College ot Phy sicians and Surgeons of tbe City of Wilming ton,?' and this new medical organization will be composed of tegular Physicians within and without our city. The following are the new ly elected officers : ; : .. President Dr. E. A. Anderson, jl Ttce President Dr. W. J. Love. rt, Secretary De. W. W. Lane. ; -. Treasurer Dr. R. B. Cobb.' Executive Committee Drs. J. F. King, S. S. Satchwell and H. 8. Norcom. The body proposes to meet weekly, for the present, and indicates much good for the cause of science and humanity. Its labors will em brace matters pertaining to the union, improve ment and elevation' of the medical profession, and is auxiliary to the State; Medical Society. No doubt, also, the Association will have an eye to the public good in its pursuits of sani tary science,' recommendations as to family and public hygiene, quarantine, &c. - We are assured that these are among its objects, and surely they are of v much importance to all classes and colors and at all times, especially durjng the prevalence of the sickly season or of any epidemic liable at any time to break out amongnsl - ' ' ; . Ye hail the formation of this ' new Medical Society with much pleasure, and wish It God speed in its noble mission of advancing medi cal science and promoting the public good. It is a movement much needed, for we have nev er known the medical profession more demor alized and more in want of those checks and balances of medical Improvement and reform, required by the great American Code of Medi cal Ethics. 1 V r J Boarders. C, The Excursion JFesterdajkl - T The steamer Wa&amaw lefi her wbarf yes terday morning with a large party of ladies and gentlemen, for an excursion to Sraithville, Arriving off the Bar near Fort Caswell, a num ber of the passengers expressed a desire to go l. A J!.l t . ... ' . a euurii uibumce ouisiae, wn en request was acceded to. The boat performed the outward passage without difficulty, although the tide was falling, but on attempting to re-enter, and after passing the outer Bar, she grounded on the rip, and all efforts to get her. off proved unavailing. A messenger was thereupon im mediately dispatched to the Revenue Cutter Wm. H. Sewardy lying in the harbor, of Smith ville, for assistance. With the promptitude characteristic of her worthy commander. Cap tain Carson, she was soon alongside of - the Waccamaw, and the passengers were speedily removed, when the Cutter started for Wil mington, arriving here about o'clock. The Waccamaw was in all probability gotten Off during the flood tide last night, and will doubtless resume her trips to day. -During the afternoon, a meeting of particl pants in the excursion was held In the cabin of the Cutter, when Dr. T. B. Carr was called to the Chair, and S. I. West, Eq., was requested to act as Secretary. A committee, consisting of Messrs. Frank H. Alfriend, John Cowan and 1 Preston Cumming, was appointed to draft suitable resolutions, who, through their .Chair man, Mr. Alfriend, submitted the following: Besolved 1st. That the thanks of all-whp parti cipated in the excursion ot to-day which, by unforseen circumstances, was seriously em barrassed, at a moment when no assurance of a pleasurable character was wanting, are due to, Captain John uarson, 01 the uutter sewara, and to his officers and men, ror assistance nana somely rendered under circumstances not au thorizing the expectation'of such courtesy. . Hesolved. 2d. That to Cant. Carson, and to his officers and men we make an expression of gratitude especially earnest on benaulsf the ladies of our company for tbe most courteous and timely aid rendered them at a time or se rious perplexity. Hesolved 3d. That a copy of these resolutions bo presented to Captain Carson and that they be published in the Wilmington papers. The meeting then adjourned. I THOS. B.. CARR, Chairmn.3 . Samuel I. West, Secretary. We would add that, with the exception Of the slight inconvenience necessitated jby the accidental grounding, the excurtionists enjoy ed the trip highly, and many on the trip up ex pressed their determination to indulge in an other excursion on the Waccamaw at an early day. Since writing the above we have been hand ed the following , card. : In regard to the steamer Waccamaw 's get ting a shore on the Rip off Fort Caswiil this afternoon, the undersigned take the occasion to state, that, owing to the strength of the tide when the steamer was off the point, that Capt. Potter was forced to sheer her off across the channel and she unfortunately grounded. No damage will be sustained by the steamer and 6he will be afloat at high water 9i r.
