On Wednfldav aftemonn. ahnnt A n'rl(Mk. a small boy, about 10 yars old, residing, with hisparent8on Mr. John Casteen's plantation on Sturgeon's Creeki' in Cape Fear. Township, about 12 miles from this city, met with a fatal accident, It seems that the father andidother of the boy were on a visit to this city leaving .the children at home to take care of the house. On older sister, who was also'makinerarrange ments to come to the city, went oveij i to her grandmother's,' a' short distance off, for a fe w minutes and while there heard a gun - fire at the bouse she had just left, which was,foIlbwed by the smaller children 'running and scream ing with terror towards the bouse she -'was visiting, by whom she was informed 1 hat their brother had shot and killed himself. Upon re turning to the house she found the be dy of her brother on the floor. It would ap ear that the father kept a loaded gun In the loft of the hdusefand that In the absence' Of t le "dther members of the family the boy, whose name was Sharpless, attempted to geV it c own- for some purpose or other, the muzzle of the gun being towards him when the trigger caught on one of the rafters and the weapon was dis charged, the whole load entering his left side, in the region of the heart, and producing, al most instant death! ' Upon being shot he drop, ped from his position in the loft to Ithe, floor below, where he was subsequently found. ; Coroner E. D. Hewlett summoned a jury Yesterday afternoon and held an inquest ' over ie body of the unfortunate boy, a verdict be ing returned in accordance with the facts. A Miniature Whirlwind. , ( i Gentlemen who were on the wharf foot of Dock street yesterday, about 1 o'clock, inform us of a young whirlwind 'or cyclone that visit ed that locality. Its effects were fire 1 observed in what Is known as Moter's alley, eathered up the trastf and pa'pefs wherq it and sent them whirling in the afr to an Immense heiglA. Among the rest was nearly a whole newspaper, which ws carried by the force of the wind entirely across the river. The ;wi id ,struck the foresail of a brig lying at the' wharf in its course, which, being loose, 'was nearly torn from the mast,T making-, the 'same time a tremendous notse. "From ttience took its course across' the rive r, and within the narrow cotripassof about twenty-fivV Jfeetrwhich it co vered the water was raised into a huge wave,' the i top of which was lashed by the wind into ! a white foam or cap, such as .are sen on the. ocean in a gale, j Reaching the,, other side or the river near Beery's old shipyard its effects" were observable on a large tree, whijeh swayed to and fro under the fury, of the blast for a few moments and then the miniature jwhirlwlnd spent itself in the country beyond., .Had a sail or row boat come within the scops of its fury while crossings the river it would have inevitably been capsized. -- 'r- N Onr Chip Basket.
