We have received Very little information of
the progress of the fearful ;;scourge of yeliow
fever in our sister city of .Charleston since our
last report, .but .we he&r from two sources,
which we deem reliable, that the disease is on
the increase and that there were, more, deaths
from the fever onfWednesday, the SOthult.,
than u any ; previous day.' v An editorial ar
ticle In the Nans of yesterday morning would
seem to indicate that this Is! the 'factual though;
that paper seems to take an encouraging view.
' of the matter. . The .News says : "'
, Charleston . is utterly J demoralized,?.', and
without any good reason. The 4 official infor
mation ' in our possession 'is 'father encour
aging than the reverse, and - yet the people
are as panic-stricken as though the fever
raged in half the houses in the city.- During
the week ending last , Saturday, there were
six deaths . frouafevef, and, since Saturday,
we have , reports of .eleven . more. .This total
of seveeteeo deaths, . in nine or . ten days,'
does not, we repeaty justify any'iwild excite
ment or violent ' alarm.-- -A large ' number of
Strangers have -gone away. 'This has the effect
'of diminishing the field in which the fever,
would first operate, and where it "might gain
strength inr.an adraneeiall along tbe line.: A
ereat improvement in tbe; condition-, of the
streets is in progress, and,' together , with the
free use of disinfectants; must tend" to keep
the disease within reasonable bounds. : ; ; -,

. fears, and face tbe danger, small or great, with

The Savannah Jiepubiicdn ot the 80th' : has re-
ceived informtlon to the .effect that the' fever
has reached Beaufort, S. C, having been
carried there from. he Phosphate wofks,
where seven "or eight "cases had prevailed.'
The easeiff Beaufort proved; ifataC The lij-
publican, advises a rigid quaranllno oi : the
numerous boat loads of .negroes u ho 'iarrive

'The PTiizriix states that the hotels and pri'
vate houses in Columbia' : are ' being rapidly
filled by persons from Charleston, and also,
learns - that several, merchants are . making
arrangements to go into business there. -:-g?From
an editorial of the Courier of the 80th,
it would appear that it has good grounds lor
believing the disease has in reality- made its
appearance in Savannah. Alluding to a sug
gestion of , a Savannah paper that a: rigid
quarantine be enforced, similar to the one here,
prohibiting people from Charleston sojourning
in that city,, the Courier says f . "It is not our
purpose to follow the example of our sister
city, and work injury to our neighbors by cry
ing out kgainst them ; but, if reports are true;
there is much need for a quarantine at Savan
nah. , We have . information 'that . fever has
already made its appearance in'Savannah, and
our information is so: reliable, that our mis
doubts can only be set aside by a sight of the
physician' 8 certificate of the burial of a man
who la now ill in Savannah it is Raid of yel
low fever in a locality known as, Yemacraw
We would also like to be informed of the char
acter of the disease with which a man near the
Park is confined to his bed. When these cer
tificates are shown us we shall be convinced.
The New York Evening jfost says : ,
"It has also been ascertained that there are
fears of the appearance of yellow fever at Sa
vannah, making, it doubly necessary lor the
authorities here to exercise the greatest vigi
lance In checking its introduction through the
crews of vessels constantly arriving from that
port." . t
In conclusion, and after taking a calm and
dispassionate view of the whole matter, we feel
constrained to urge upon our authorities to
relax not a particle in their efforts to prevent
the introduction of the disease into our city,
and we also urge them to carry on the good
work of cleansing the city and placing it in a
good sanitary condition. '. The , restrictions
which they "may find' it necessary to enforce
may seem harsh, but 'self preservation is the
first law of nature,', and : they owe. itj to our
citizens who have already " tasted the bitter
cup '.' to persevere in their, efforts to avert the
horrors of a second visitation of the terrible
scourgev While we deeply sympathize with
the good people of Charleston In the ordeal
through-which they are passing5 and believe
that onr people will dp everything they can, to
help' them, shohld assistance in any maniuer
become necessary, we" at the same time, think
no-considerable portion of the citizens of that
olace can blame our authorities for the action
they have taken in the premises. ... .

1 A TERRIBLE TEMPTATION,
By Chasms Rbad, author Ot Pnt Yourself
in His Place," " Griffith Gaunt," " Hard Cash,"
uItis Never Too Late to Mend," "White
Lies," .Ac, Ac, with many original illustra
tions. ' -
The most popular publication of the season
is " A Terrible Temptation," Charles Reade's
last Manv read it as it appeared serially. It
is quite the fashion to condemn it, but in such
terms as to excite curiosity and prompt a pe
rusal. , we pity the mind that Is polluted
by a perusal of this storv. To such an impure
reader nothing would be safe which could, be
tortured into nastiness, , and against such
Shakespeare, the Bible, and physiology should
be shut. This novel was riot written for either
pruriency or prudery. Chicago Even. Journal.
