How Henry Berry Lowrej Amuses
Himself.
We learn from one who. has lately been vis
iting different portions of Robeson county
that Henry Berry Lowrey has recently been
playins some practical jokes upon the soldiers
and militia who ' are in the field against, him I
and his gang. It is said that the U. S. troops
have their camp near what is known as Pleas-
ant Prospect Churct, and that about a mile
from there resides an ld woman who sells
" tangle-le6n whiskey, who has been receiving
frequent visits from the " boys in blue." Re-
port has it that bu Wednesday last six of the
soldiers were proceeding to execute one of

startling them with the information that he
was the redoubtable Henry Berry Lowrey. He
told them they were fools if they came to Rob- 12th of Jone- She lef Charleston for Wil
eson county with the expectation of killing or mington on the 31st August, but of course
capturing him. for it would never be done.
He had lately received a message from4 the
Lord that he had 12 years yet to live, and fur-
then informed the astonished ''men of Mars"
that he had singled out some of their com-
rades upon whom he intended to wreak his
vengeance. Being unarmed, the soldiers seized
the first opportunity to make a backward
movement in the direction of their camp, wil
ling to forego the luxury of indulging in their
favorite .beverage rather than provoke the
wrath of the daring outlaw. " " ; .
; A few days after the above occurrence, our
informant states, an officer of the militia re-
cejved a message from Lowrey, stating that,
he had visited their camp the night before and
Inspected their arms to see if they were in j
proper condition. As a proof of this assertion,
he stated that he had left his "card," which
would be found attached to one of their guns.
Upon examining thelt weapons the name of
Henry Berry Lowrey was found inscribed
upon the breach of one of themyery much to
the astonishment of ye gallant "melish."
Disputed Property. '
' Happening, at the Marshal's office , in - the
City Hall, yesterday afternoon, we were wit

old, came in and stated to the official named

in many others, the 'course of true love had
not run smooth." A rival stepped in, claimed
the object of her affections, and proceeded to
enforce that claim by taking possession of

which she -carried in ;her tpocket : .that:she
