Subsequently during the dsy, after meeting with ill success at Dawson's Bank, he called at the First National: Bank and placed a f 10,000 TJ. S. ' Upon the refusal of the officers to let him have this amount he came down in bis figures to $700, stating that there were others Interested In the bond and that he wanted to pay over some of the money to one of theseparUes. The suspicions of the Bank officers ; were .' immediately, aronsed whcn.it was found that he was so. easily satisfied, and they telegraphed o the Treafury Department to aee if such a bond bad been issued, glring a description of the samej and received the re ply that there had been such a bond Issued, but that it had been caveated.1 ' In Jther words nobody was authorized to sell the bond except the person In whose favor it was made. v-. 1 ' Previous to . telegfshing however, the officers of the Bank carefully examined the bend and came to the conclusion that it : was, in their opinion, a counterfeit. Information was thereupon, given to U. S. CommYssloner McQuigg who issued a warrant for Keelers arrest, which was placed in the hands of U. 8.
