The Watchman was always a good paper and will no doubt keep up its well-earned reputa tion. City Court. The following cases were disposed of jester daj: Wm. T. Cutlar, charged with cursing, quarreling, Ac, was found guilty. Judgment suspended on the payment of the costs. Albert Williams, charged with cursing, quarreling, &c Judgment suspended on the payment of costs. Not His First Experience. Alluding to the assault upon and attempted robbery of Daniel O'Sullivan in this city a few days ago, the Newbern Times says : "It wilj be remembered that O'Sullivan was robbed in this city by Henry Clifton and others some three years ago, for which they ware sentenced to the Penitentiary for twenty ytyirs." -1 : -f :'- It seems that Dan. is a favorite victim of the "bruisers." Additional Troops for Robeson County. We learn that a detachment of twenty-four U. S. Troops, intended as a reinforcement to those already on duty in. Kobeson county, arrived in this city last evening and will take the cars for the scene of operations this morn ing. ' Col. Mendenhall, who has been with his garrison at Fort Johnson for a brief period, will return with the troops and assume com mand. . Sadden 3eatn. A white man from Bladen codnty, by the name of Hayes, who was found very sick on a' ratt at one of the wharves of this eity on Satur day evening last, and taken: to the City ' Hos pital, died in that institution, on Sunday morn ing. Coroner Hewlett was. notified and held an inquest over the body yesterday, but we have not been informed of the nature of the. verdict. Parker,N formerly employed as a clerk in the Post office, died on Sunday even ing, a prey to consumption, with which disease he had been suffering for some time past. We are glad to see that the article, which originated in our paper a few days since, under the head of "Spinning Cotton," meets the ap proval of the most respectable of our State press, even If they are Inclined to ignore Its paternity. " On the certificate of Dr. J. Francis King, who examined into the condition of Rachel Sealey, arrested for disorderly conduct oh Fri day last and sentenced by the City Court to pay a fine of $20 and costs, she Was sent the Hospit al for treatment instead of being carried to the Work House. 4 Sent to Hospital. Two white parishioners who have been in mates of the Poor House for some time past, named respectfully Beccy Blood worth and Labors Brinkley, were; transferred to the City Hospital yesterday for treatment, they having been pronounced in a condition to require it. It would be well for ; our readers generally to preserve a copy of 'this descrip tion : T As It, Is possible that the Lowrey gang of outlaw, now infesting Robeson county. North Carolina, may singly or in a body, attempt to escape from that section, the following des cription of the gang is given, in order that the public' may be posted in - regard to them. There are rewards offered, both by the State and county authorities, for their apprehension, amounting, in the aggregate, to $8,500 for the gang i Henry Berry Lowrey is about five feet eight inches hitch, weighs about 145 or .150 lbs, is straight and square built, has straight dark hair, dull blue eyes, and is so nearly white, that he might readily pass, for a white mao... He has a black mark immediately under his leit eye, made by falling on a pot in his youth. At present he wears full beard1 and mestache on. his face, of a dark col6r; not very thick. He is about 27 years of age and is slow in speech. Stephen Lowrey is SI years of age, five feet seven or, eight inches high, deep black hair ana eyes, is oi a swarthy, aark Drown com plexlontaln vlsaged, rather stooping habitj and is quick spoken. He has a bad counte nance. ' At present, he wears a moustache and goatee, very black but thin. Thomas Lowrey.' is about six feet high, tolerably heavy built, weighs about 200 lbs, has a dull blue eye and a pleasing jconute nance, is nearly white and will readily pass as such; he has a full face, dark hair and beard and Is rather quick ' spoken, with 'a low and pleasant voice. He has been wounded by gunshot In bis left arm and back. He is about twenty-five years of age , Andrew Strong is a tall slim man, over six feet high, bright mulatto complexion black eyes and 'dark straight hair, and Is quick spoken.. He wears no whiskers, and has but little beard. Heia about 26 years of age. v Boss Strong is about 5 feet 7 inches high, thick set, fall face and will weigh about 170 lbs. He is only 20 years of age, and- has ' no beard, only a thick down on his upper lip and temples. He is nearly white, and will readily passas B.2h. He is not disposed to be i talka tive. BIS hair is black, with aT disposition to curl; he wears it short. He . has black eyes, sod heavy eye-rbrows which nearly meet. , Parties in South Carolina and the "country Immediately around Robeson County, should be on the look out for .these outlaws, as thev frequently leave their haunts singly, for ' pur poses of their own; ana itns possible that they mav attempt to flee the county. Front Charleston . v ' ' ; The News of yesterday morning says : "The number of deaths from yellow fever, during the past week, as shown by the daily reports of the city registrar, is 26, viz : Mqu day's report 1, TuesTday'a report 1, Wednes- day's report 3, Thursday's report. 4, Friday's report Saturday's rerwrt 4, iSunday'a report 5. r These deaths s occurred on the . following days: On Sunday 1, on Tuesday 5, on Wednes day 8, on Thursday 6, on Friday 4,. and on Sat urday 3; total 26. These figures show that the heaviest mortality as wsb oxpected to be the case, was Immediately after the sudden change in the weather from sultry warmth to damp coolness. In our last weekly repert we showed that the number of deaths ' up to the 16th inst (including the death on that day .re ported by the registrar on Sunday), was 56. Adding - the - subsequent deaths to date, we have a total of 82 deaths this year,, against 464 for the corresponding period in 1858, 96 in 1856, "and 365 in 1854." : 4 - The city registrar reports 5 deaths from the prevailing disease for the twenty-four hours ending at 12 M, on Sunday, and our press tel egram last night reports 5 for the twenty-four hours next ensuing. - Printing Inn. Special Dispatcb. to the Petersburg Index. Raleigh, N. C, Sept. 23, 1871. Last night the court sat until rather a late hour, and one of the Biggerstaff cases was dispossed of. It was an indictment against J. H. Witherlow, Wm. Mclntire, W. Teal, Das. Hunt, and Thos. Tomes, for waylaying Aaron Biggerstaff, and assault- ling him while on his way to testify as a witness, under process ot law before a United States Commissioner. The 2pd count, charge of conspiracy to intimidate Baggerstaff away from his political princi ples, about the first of May last in Cleve land county. The District Attorney? Star buck, and Assistant District Attorney, S. P. .Phillips, and Lusk prosecuted, "and Messrs. Strong, Lee, Durham and Carson for defence. J. H. Witherlow, Wm. Mclntire and W. Teal pleaded guilty and the remain ing two, Jas. Hunt and Thomas Tomes, were cleared on their evidence, as they all testified that Hunt and James were not on the raid on Biggerstaff. ' Biggerstaff, his wife and daughter all swore directly contrary, saying that they recognized them both. Both Hunt and Tomes were dis charged from custody. Mclntire and Teal are both under sentence, having been convicted, in the Justice case. This morning another case of Bigger staff was taken up, charging Amos Owen, who was convicted and sentenced in the Justice case and some 20 others with as sault upon him for voting for the Republi can candidate for Congress,, in 1870, in that district. At this hour, 6 P. M., only two witnesses have been examined. SPIRITS OF TURPENTINE. 1 1 Warrenton has a chain gang. The "Warrenton Gazette is a live paper. - Ohicaken Cholera is raging in Warren county. fj Beef is retailing at 8, cents per pound in Warrenton. Newbern has jast had its first sausages for the season. Fresh pork is retailing at ten cents per pound in Newbern. Deer are more numerous in Warren county than for many years. The farmers of Warren are trembling with fear of au early frost. - --i A distemper is prevailing among the cattle iu Henderson county. Warrenton boasts of a one pound tomato and an early Rose potato weighing 21 ounces. The grand reception . at the skating rink is Raleigh on Friday even ing was a very brilliant affair. Rates ot fare have been re duced on the North Carolina Division of the Richmond & Danville Railroad - to 4 cents per mile for first-class, and 3 cents per, mile tor second-class. On Wednesday of last wek, between the hours of 12 and 1 P. M.Ythe residence ot Dr. J. W. Wiseman, in Farmington, Davie county was totally destroyed by flre.? The origin of the fire was accidental.
