Thnmonthlv visit to the public works
for the Improvement of Cape Fear River and
Bar was mada by your Committee on ' Wed
nesday of last week, tne osu instant. - ; .
Since oui last visit on the 7th of November,
about one hundred and fifty (150) lineal feet of
the line of breakwater has been finished, and
about one hundred and twsnty-five (125) feet
more, prettyiwell advanceo-iowaias- cump
tlon. which will be finished in a few. flays. ,
During the past few months a succession: of
storms have prevailed upon the coast, acconw
panled by unusually high tides, iavQlvidgsome
loss of time, labor and: materialsvt and alo
some change of operations; and as this report
may not beclearjy understood a harmonizing
strictly wiVi former reports, we recapitulate.
" since the commencement oV the .work,
about nine hundred (900)-.lineal feetv,or the
breakwater haf been ; permanently fixed, and
completely finished, one bonded ano twenty
five (125) feet more nearly finished, ; besides a
rtr,0ipraWft flmonnt of work done I securing
the foundation for the advancing breakwater.
In the meantime, the noaung sanu i i
has steadily followed the worfttfs flnished, land
thtft a firm beach Hf front of the break
water, twoto four hundred feet wide, thus
riirinff the stability of the work against al
most any contingency. ' f ' A . 1
The . violent. Southeast gale of the 14th of
Novemberkaccomp&nled by the extraordinary
tidal-wave of five to seven feet above, ordinary
tides, wept away a portion of .the 5 front of
Smith Island beach, Sofith of the worfes, bnt
we are pleased to Say that it is- now rapidly
"And we f further pleased to note the,'; per
feet success , and utility of, the-cateh 1 sand
fenees. and grass cultivation, neither of which
wardamaged. but resisted j without injury
hoth storm and tide, and we cannot but esteem
U m moatl fortunate that the work dT building
tin and securing the beach, was commenced as
Srfy as it WMutfor which, the probabilities
are that a large portion ot the . beach -would
ha beerrwepttnto the river hy the late
storm and tidal wave. . - .
