Shipping articles for sale at the office of the Morning Star, '. tf Arrest of a Counterfeiter. . Hearing a great hue and cry on North Water street last night, about 8 o'clock, we hastened to tsceftain the cause of It, when we were famished with the following particulars : A white man of very respectable appearance, being well dressed and polite and affable in his, manners, entered the saloon of Mr. W. T. Danicls,.near the corner of Market and North Water streets, and called for a cigar, receiving which he offered in payment a $5 bill. Upon being asked if he had nothing smaller, he displayed a roll of bills, ail" of which were or the same denomination, and stated that it was the best he could do. Mr. R. F. Eyden, who received the money, gave him the change and he walked ot. He had barely got clear of the door, however, before Mr." Eyden discov ered that the bill was counterfeit and started in immediate pursuit of his- late customer, whom he detected a few minutes afterward coining out of Mr. D. J. Gilbert's saloon ' on South Water street, wherc he had passed anoth er of the spurious bills. Mr. E. informed him that the bill be had received was a counterfeit, upon which the man offered ta exchange it for another. This Mr. E. refused to accede to until he could get to the saloon, where there was a light, and keeping a watch on his customer they proceeded- to Mr. Daniels' saloon. Upon enteripg, Mr. Eyden asked Mr. Daniels to call a policeman, while he closed, the door on his prisoner.' The latter in the meantime offered Mr, E, $10 to let him go, and upon that being refused, he proposed to Increase the sum to $50, appealing to Mr. E. " not to get him in a scrape." In the meantime two or . three policemen came in and took charge of thje prisoner. Just after leaving the door, the man broke and ran for dear life, and this caused the hue and cry alluded to in the outset. The fugitive ran up Water street to Postoffice alley, thence to the alley leading into Princess street," and down Princess to Water again, the policemen in full pursuit and shouting "Stop him !" "Stop him !" At the corner of Princess and Water he was finally captured, when he was taken to the Guard House. We learn that while running he threw away a nuniber of bills. At the station house he gave his ' name as Henry Douglas, which Is In all probability an "alias. We understand that he passed several bills on the wharf before he entered Mr. Daniels' saloon. Upon searching the prisoner at the station house about $ 143 was found on ; his person, but whether it was good money or counterfeit we could not ascertain. He will probably have a hearing this morning. AdvertisTnff for tlio People.
