Those who have hot visited our beautiful Oakdale Cemetery within tho few months past wouiq be astonished to see the improvements whleh have been" made in - Its appearance, . fi y v , jiwprwveineois, wepau a visit tothe JfUent clty of the dead' a lew-days B!DC; aod a8 wej propose to : give,1 our, readers the benefit of our observations we will Include a'soit ot general review of. the objects of most .interest within, ihe sacred Inclosure.. ifThe first ooject mat meets the eye of the visitor upon entering the jgatev and Immediately. ln front ot-.the 8ame, is a? beautiful ' equare - lot neatly Inclosed V tx' evergreens, ,;Velon2ing" to f 8t. John's i Lodge and Concord Chap ter, F. 'A Ai M.," of this city, and designed by them for the Interment - of sucb. of tljelr brotherhood as may die in or near the city and who own no lot In the Cem'eteryr Next In front of the entrance and situated on a gentle acllvlty. is,, the Confederate Cemetery, with Us neat -.Iron railing and grassy, monnd, fcotn, which we hope soon to see a monument toweringyinscribed - with the names of the noble dead who sleep so peacs4nlly within the lovely and hallowed enclosure, and which will complete the beauty of the spot so dear to our people. On the left of the gate and near the entrance has been erected since thercommence moot of the past year a ; neat and handsome Lodge, a description of which we have hereto fore given in these columns. This is designed as a resting places for visitors ; but the Lodge could, we think, be'greatly Improved by being enclosed, and, indeed, without this is done. ine Duuaing win De coostaerea more ornamen- a AAMU UBblUU VU iUV I1UV VI IUO VIVft vii UC leading from what was formerly the Southern entrance, we passed a - beautiful and raised square, being four full lots in one, the pro perty of Cape Fear Lodge No. 2,L O. O. F. In the centre of the' square stands a marble monument, beneath which rest the remains of Mr. Robert McLauchlin, who died In April, 1845, and was buried In the old city grave' yard, corner of Fourth and Dock streets. Mr. McLauchli nwas the first teacher of the Odd Fellows School, (which opened in this city in October, 1843) and was a meaner of Cape Fear Lodge. .'.He died In 1 the discharge of his duties and the brotherhood have "removed bis re mains to their own lot, where tbey can be properly cared for by them. There are many private lots that 6how the care of loving hands and of Sorrowing hearts, but of these we forbear to speak. The care and attention that is bestowed on these grounds is apparent at every stepand no one can doubt that all Is being done that is possible with the limited means the Company have at command to please every lot owner and to beautify and adorn the grounds. - r I But we now come to the great improve ments which have been made in certain loca tions during the year just closed, to describe which this article was mainly intended. On the West front we find that a eat and substantial lnclosure has . taken , ther place of the rlckjety worm fence which formerly bordered the grounds on the side' of the creek. This fence will be extended still further around. One year ago this front was in appearance forbid ding and unsightly, and really a disgrace to the grounds. Now we find that & canal has been opened from7 the gate nearly around the water front of the grounds. The unsightly logs and trash, have been removed and the low places arebelng filled ' In, making a gradual slope from the avenue to the margin of the canal. This slope will be set Tout with a - variety of grasses and shrubbery, which, when com Jjlete'd, ; wi;iv present' ;td; the .view beautiful green sward in place of the stubble quacgmlre which formerly; looked so uninviting to the visitor." On the North front it is de signed to .construct a ,jiew avenue . or drive leading along the edge of the wa ter.' and . terminating at ,. the. Northeast ern corner of the grounds, where r will con nect with the old avenues. Between this and the old avenue on the North front are. now in process of construction a tier of lots, which will take the place of the unsightly embank ment, ten to fifteen fieet high, which was cov ered with, thick v.undergrowth and entirely obstructed the view on that side- of the grounds. These lots, ! wh?n : In proper afcape,! wUlpertainly:Lbei'lhe-l most de sirable on the. grounds. The improvements alluded to, we understand, are among the flret ever undertaken4 for the5 old' lot Wners, and will no doubt be' duly appreciated by them all; besides which theyw ill add fifty per cent." to the aboearance of the Cemetery.'These Im provements are due In ajjreat measure to the untiring teal and interest constantly manifest ed by Donald McRae, Esq., ' President of the Oakdale Cemetery Company, who has been aided in his efforts 1q preserving and beautify Ing the hallowed grounds by R. J.' Jones, Esq., Secretary and Treasurer; also to Mr. T. Don- Ian,- the; Superintendent, of the.
