Capture of a Thief.
On Tuesday evening last a thief entered the
store of Mr, c. W. Oldham, on South Water
street, and stole a fine ham. On ; Wednesday
evening he was ri lLvcd jof another piece of
bacon in the tame manner. Getting Ured of
this way of disposing of his stock, 1e resolved
to keep a sharp lookout on Thursday evehfog
and endeavor to dlscdver'and capture the
thief. About the usual hour when the visitor

nient position for watching and went to an
other part of the store. The clerk had not
long to wait before a voracious looking sped

Court opened at Whitevllle on Monday last,
about 12 o'clock, and on Tuesday evening the

A colored woman in the Southeastern
section of the city gave birth to a child on
Tuesday night last wiih two well-developed
horns, one on each side of the head. It is sala
to be quite a cariosity, and many persons have
been to examine the singular specimen of hu
manity. A FATAL ACCIDENT.
A Man Ban Over and Crnaned hj a
Bailread Car as Ualn Depot. .
Yesterday morning, about 11 o'clock, aa the
freight train on the Wilmington aad Weldon
Railroad was coming in and just after passing
the carve between Seventh and Eighth Sts., a
Utile West of the Union Depot, a young man
by the name of Monroe Grady, employed as a
train hand ou the road, run In between two of
the cars for the purpose ef uncoupling them,
the train moving slowiy at the time, when he
was caught by the bumpers and thrown upon
the track, the cars passing over him. As soon
as possible after the accident was discovered
the train was stopped, when It was found that
both legs of the unfortunate man were nearly
cut in twain near the body, and that, one of
the legs was horrlb y crashed from near the
hip to the ankle. He lived only a few mlnntes
after the ecldent.
Deceased was formerly, a resident of Fay
etteville, bat came here a few montbs ago and
secured employment as a laborer In the Wil
mington and Weldon Kail road sbope. He
worked la the shops until about two months
ago, when he went to work as a train band,
which vocation he followed at the time of bis
death. He was about 22 years old. An aunt,
we understand, is the only relative he .has in

Coroner Hewlett held an Inquest over the
body yesterday afternoon, the jury returning
a verdict In accordance with the facts as de
tailed above. ' -

and their names and U rms of service 'are as
follows: Wm. Martin, 9 montbs; Quash
Bannerman, 6 months; John McKethan, 13
months, and Bob Webb, 6 months.
