McGarity, of the First Co operative Store, agent for their sale in this city, for one of the ."..Reliance Non explosive Attachments," which are claim ed to be an abiolute protection" from4 burning accidents ; as, in the first place, it will prevent the flime from Igniting the gas that Is in the lamp, thus rendering it Impossible for an ex plosion to'occur ; and, secondly, it will allow mr m . m - . - the gas to escape freely without any risk whatever, and thus an explosion from over pressure is prevented. The dwelling house of Mrs. Mary Ann Mc Lean, residing about three-quarters of a mile from Shoe Heel, Robeson county, was dis covered to be 00 fire, yesterday morning, about 4 o'clock, and before anything could be done in the j? ay of extinguishing the flames it was entirely consumed. The building was quite a large one, being two-stories high and con taining eight rooms. t The fire was evidently the work of an incendiary, as it originated on the outside of the dining room, situated about ten feet from the main building, with which it was connected by a piazza. The family saved but a small portion of their furniture and clothing, including. a few beds.: Mrs. McLean estimates her loss at from $1,500 to $3,000,' upon which thtre was no Insurance. The loss falls heavily upon the lady in question, as we earn that she will not be able to . replace it. No clue has as yet been obtained as to the perpetrators of the terrible deed. The New Hose Bridge Tested. The new hose bridge, invented by Mr. L. W. Hodges of this city, was tested at the En gine House of the Howard Relief F. . Co., yesterday afternoon, the' Chief 'Engineer and other officials being present. The bridge was placed in position over 1 the " hose,1 which was stretched across the street, and the, steamer Adrian, weighing about 5,000 pounds, was driven rapidly across it, the result being en tirely satisfactory to all who witnessed the test. We have no doubt that the Board of Aldermen, at their next meeting, .will order these bridges to be used hereafter by the Fire Department. . , . .-. 3 . '-' 5 . - "5 - "i v. . A Remarkable Fish. We were shown jesterday, at the store of Mr. E. Peschau, a remarkable fish which was Caught a few days since - at Myrtle Grove Sound. Nutt, of this city, to the Chamber of Commerce. . Several gentle men, including our friend, Mr. Nutt, ex amined this rare specimen yesterday, but none have been able as yet to locate it, though the Captain of one of the vessels in port, who was present, said he had seen a fish somewhat re sembling- it in the Mediterraneans : At iai: events it is the first specimenof the kind that has ever been seen in our waters, and we learn that Prof. Kerr wUl be consulted in reference to it. By the way, our city should possess a public museum in which to preserve all such curiosities as this, and we hope the Library Association may be induced to take the matter .in band. .. ' : '" "' - .
