I lsiacuon mat x announce to you to day the tainment of an object so ardently: desired red by I us, and for which we have labored so cheerfully during the past six years, namely : the erection ia Oakdale Cemetery of a suitable monument to the Confederate dead. We have redeemed the promise made years ago. And while our sister Associations, In various parts of the State, are engaged in the same good work, and other monuments are in pro- cess of construction, we are glad to believe that our own; wiU be the first Confederate monument completed In North Carolina. In selecting a design for the monument, we sought to combine simplicity and durability "ItU UMIUUU1UUB UrUUUrHUUB UUU CUIlS I O CIO- gance, rather than lofty dimensions with elao- orate embelllshmenU indeed, the paucity of our uoauccs wuuia nave preciuuea ine taiier i and have endeavored to preserve ilt, as far as practicable, from everything like individu ality, as Is shown in Us dedication to the Con federate Dead, of every section of onr beloved South, whether unknown or identified wherever the fortunes of war may have cast their honored remains. The Pedestal is con structed of North Carolina granite, . which is pronounced by competent judges to be of the finest quality. It Is surmounted by the statue of a Confederate , 8oldier, cast in the purest bronze, and we are told by those who ought to know, that it will compare favorably with w.u w. nuvow nuvwMiLuai any similar work of artfin the country. The result ol oar labor is so entirely satisfactory as amply to compensate for any sacrincea involved in tne prosecution r -1 of our work. I may also add that no stronger when I consider the matters ot great mo proof of the zeal that animated the officers ot ment involved in the impending contest, tbe Association could, possibly be adduced j hold that questions of personal conveni than that they should have been able to ac- j : i- complishso much with, such comparatively limited means.
