It Is eald by eminent scientific men that "the decomposition of a single potato or a wilted turnip will breed disease If the vapors of the decaying substance are confined to -the walls 4 of a bouse." The same Is said of decaying substances in alleys, 'streets, and yards. The vapors arising from manure and rubbish piles, will so impregnate'tbe atmosphere as to make It unhealthy, and thereby spread disease 'and death. This is the canse of so many diseases breaking ont that baffle" tbesklil of physicians, j Fillhiness causes destruction wherever It exists. Friends or Teraperanee. A friend at Whlteville, Columbns county, informs us that at the last regular meeting of Calumbus Council No. 101, F, of T., the follow ing; officers were installed for the ensuing terjn: PreslJent, II.-U. Moffltt; Ei President, T: A. Inmafi; Associate, J, A. Lumsden; Chap lain, W -B.'"Maness;' Secretary, T. James Memory; Financial Secretary. W. II. Frszler Treasurer, J. L.' H. Whitaker, Secretary of the State Coun cil, after which he delivered an eloquent ad dress on the subject of Temperance,' which our friend states be baa no doubt will be pro dncUte of much good in the community. A Live Bolt- ' V- ' The lare number of Republicans in atten dance ou the mass meeting yesterday, estab lishes the correctness of pur judgment in re gard to the strength of 'the movement ' with the masses of the party.'. The number present from the country was' notably large, and com prised some of the most lnfluentla members of the RcpublUan party. ; ; ; ' The fact that the Conveo tloa failed to make nominations Is no evidence of the failure of tbe movement. It was very clear from the ery moment the body was organized that the benchmen of the Rocky Pointers were present in considerable number aod had -a preeoncer Jfd arrangement to either get control of or break up the meeting; and their violent course in carrying out their programme will prove an element of strength to the y disaffected mem w of the Prty. It has terred to steady the wavering, to add new recruits and to trans 'orm int0 bitter hate what before was only de cldea opposition. . ; . ; If the Rocky Pointers Imagine they have de Iecd the object of thelr opponents they are Wo, a5sUken, we thinW ..;J t. . . ot If those who inaugurated the opposition 10 the Rocky Point ticket1 nd who were Jamefally bullied and browbeaten yesterday wll by any , influences whatever be driven to the so pport of that ticket, we wish to ask mem on anegtinn - nn r tti k a vwu imvi w a vw am nwaa?t th " wnicu compels men wno are ireated . to lick the Jiand that smites ra-to Tol ,or those "w10 pcnecTxte tbta t ; ' . I- .- ' ' - . !eai iocs. The heat still continues oppressive In this locality. t . . Watermelons- are coming in freely and falling In price. , Marshal Canaday is absent for a brief visit to his family in Hillsboro, This city and vicinity was visited by several floe showers of rain yesterday. It must have been delightful to act as Chairman oftha pony-penning yesterday. ' Farmers in this, section will hardly be able now to complain of the want of rain. We learn that Mr. P. McGowan, keeper of the Capitol at Raleigh, is very ill. He Is the father- of Capt. McGowan, of the Furcell House. In his speech yesterday, George Price spoke of the Rocky Point Convention as "a bull-pen, a hog-pen, and a slave-pen." George is a very decided Republican, and he ought to know what he is talking about. Clarendon Lodee No. 2, K. of P., will meet this evening, at 8 o'clock,' In the new Hall over the College of Physicians and Surgeons, ou which occabloo tho ;offlcers for the ensniDg term will be Installed. Washlugton Howe, whose name appears in the report of the Mayor's Court in Sunday's paper, says he U not the Individual alluded to. In fact, he says the boy gave his name wrong fully, as It should have been stated as Wash ington Lane. Last night a small crowd of Schenck men, with a band of music, marched through the streets to the Market House, where a short speech was delivered' by James Heaton, Schenck's "right bower," at the conclusion of which the crowd took up their line of march for some other quarter. One of the " bulliest" of the unpenned bulla who pawed dirt at the Qity Hall yester day was the little pickled Gherkin. He talked as glibby about tbe " Eu Kluz Democracy" as an eld stager, and was willing to do big things for the harmony of the Great Radical party. " An ounce of civet, good apothecary IV Gerken was mnch mortified at the bad be havior at the pony-penning. He was afraid the Democratic papers would have something to say abont it. Ye e, we will say It was the most disgraceful affair we ever witnessed. Gerken is not a full grown bull, but a bull-calf. We've heard it said : " There's uo telling the luck of a lousy calf." Tbe Bolters Convention. The Republican bolters from the late Rocky Point Convention, known as the Manning fac tion, met at City Hall yesterday morning with the avowed intention of nominating another county ticket to run in opposition to the one nominated at Rocky Point on the 29th ult. We have had occasion heretofore to refer to dis graceful scenes enacted at Conventions of the Radical party in this city, but that of yester day far exceeded any similar demonstration in this respect that we have ever witnessed here or elsewhere. From the hour of meeting until that of adjournment the Hall was a scene of continual uproar and "confusion worse con founded," during which insulting ephlthets were applied and blows exchanged, threatening a general " knock down and drag out." There was evidently a preconcerted movement on the part of the Schenck faction to break up the Convention, which was to a certain extent successful. There advent upon the scene was the signal for the commencement of the tumult and confnsion which ensued, and which for some time precluded the possibility of the transaction of any business. Finally an or ganizatlon was effected by calling W. H. Ger kin to the chair and appointing Lewis Nixon as Secretary. The latter Individual's duties were light, aa we would have defied any one to put on paper anything in the shape of an official report of anything that was said or done in the Convention. No nominations were made by the Convention, but a Committee, consist ing of one from each Ward and Township was finally appointed, with power to effect a com'. promise with the Schenck faction or bring out a seperate ticket, whichever they may deem most expedient. One thing Is certain, however, whatever may be the action of the Committee, and that is that a large number of those who bolted the Rocky Point ticket will fight it to the last, submitting to no com promise tinder any . circumstances so far as they are individually concerned. We give below the names of the Committee appointed:. , r ., -. ? ; : CITT. , First Ward Owen Burney. Second Ward Chas. Mallett, Sr. Third WardIf ames Dry. - -Fourth Ward J. H. Whltemaa. Fifth Ward Charles Southerland. COTTKTT. Masoriboro' -J, J. Orrell. Harnett D. C. Davis. Federal Point Stephen Keycs. ' ." ' ; Grant Charles Foy. Cape Fear H. E. Just after the Republican Convention ad journed yesterday afternoon, and while a noisly crowd were yelling and gesticulating In the Hall, a colored man lrom tbe rural dis tricts was observed by a police officer to have an open raizor in his hand. The officer ar rested the man and took him ' to the Guard House, when lie was followed by the crowd, who demanded his release and for a few min utes affairs wore quite a threatening aspect. Finally, however, the crowd, which nearly filled the City Hall yard, was dispersed, Capt. Fitzgerald having informed them that, as the man had made no attempt to commit Tlolence, he wpuld be released In a few minutes, minus Ws dangerous weapon.- rHr' I XiA'iii-n .-... v; A- Oar Chip Basket. The man who carried out his moral reso lutions forgot to bring them back. ,'; . Why are balloons in the air like vagrants ? Because they have no visible means ol Enpport. Flatterers only lift a man up, as It is 'said the eagle does the tortoise to get something by the fall. The title "grass widow " is of French origin. It la derived from the French ; word grace,", aflfcd originally meant a widow by courtesy. . , A writer on long engagements says : "The difficulty of sustaining with appropriate effect the character of an engaged man is sometimes enormous." - It is said that the ladies of the congrega" tion of a popular English preacher are sub scribing for a fund to procure him , a divorced We won't ask whether the movement is a seli lsh one.' Civilization is still advancing ati a head long rate in Alabama, a party of gentlemen having signed a pledge not to use tobacco, in any shape or manner, during church service. A Pekin, Illinois, woman was asked by the preacher if her husband feared the Lord. She replied : " Fear him ? why, bless you, he is so 'feared of him that he never goes out of the house Sundays without taking his gun along." Foreign advertising may be done through the Star Advertising Agency more economi cally than by negotiating direct with pub lishers. Work upon the $100,000 gov ernment building in Raleigh is soon to be commenced. Applications have been made for all tbe city halls is Raleigh for the State fair week. The farmers of Iredell and Rowan counties are turning their attention to raising tobacco. Mayor W. W. It seems that during the early part 61 the day, Mr. Lackey had been absent, and returning home about 10 or 11 o'clock for dinner, his wife told him to look after the children while she took.a.bucXet and started for the spring, whep lipgering much longer than usnal, Mr. Lackey went down to the spring,' and found his unfortunate wife sus pended by a cord by means ; of which she had hung herself from a tree near by.
