On board ships and steamboats, about hotels and other public places, there is nothing so nice to purify the air. Simple green copperas, disolved under the bed in anything that will hold water, will render a hospital, or other places for the sick, free from unpleasant smells.' In fish markets, slaughter-houses sinks, and wherever there are offensive putrid gases, dis solve copperas and sprinkle it about, and in a few days the smell will pass away. If a cat, rat, or mouse dies abont the house and sends ' i forth an offensive gas, place some dissolved copperas In an open vessel near the place where the nuisance is, and it will soon purify the atmosphere, t. . - .y Oar Chip Basket. 'By telegraph tothe Trlbune.l ' ' ' 7 , ; J " -- Baltimore; July 9. It ia stated : upon excellent authority that the United States Marshal for North Carolina leit Washington yesterday vfor Raleigh, with ; $200,000: in Government funds,, drawn from the Treasury ostensibly to pay the expenses or, the,United States Courts. Prominent " Conservatives from North Carolina, who are here : irC attend ance upon the National Convention, ex press the belief that a great part of this unusually large fund will ibe used by the Grant office-holders for election purposes iu the State campaign 'now in progress. The way invhich this can be done witB iput making palpable defalcation, they say, is to make enormous fictitious bills for ex penses ini arresting ; pretended Ku EZlux. There are already over 500 persons indicted for Ku Klux offenses alleged to have been committed'one and two years ago, and it is known that the officers have the' names or hundreds of others upon whom they have expressed the' intention to serve pro cesses. ; H-::'-:'1.., ;.:';::.;; They have a donble purpose in - view in those wholesale arrests. 1 First, ,to obtain an electioneering fund from the fees, mile age, 1 and; expenses they can charge for serving processes; aad, Second, to intimi date large numbers of conservative voters in close counties. All of the Federal office holders in the State are putting forth the most desperate efforts to carry the State election for Caldwell. One of these men boasted to a correspondent of The Tribune recently that they had the State and Fed eral Treasuries to draw upon; and meant to use all the money necessary to win. . ; Tribune Editorial, - v ' 'Enormous collections of money are now making in this city and elsewhere j to be sent into the State of North Carolina. The screws have been put to the office holders and the. expectants ot office. The trading interests ot the great cities which imagine they can make something by the election of Gen. Grant have been plenti fully bled. The . assault which is to be made upon the purity of the ballot-box: in North Carolina will be one which in energy and shamelessness has never been surpassed. Against all this the opposi tion have nothing but the strength of their cause and . the determination which this gives them. They have no , Courts, no Custom-houses, no Post-offices ; they are destitute of these appliances of force and terror of which the Grant people dispose. They cannot use the writs, the sheriff's posses, the handcuflsvand the jails , which exercise so powerful an influence upon the spirits of men in rural communities. Th have no. money.' They have been too-1 thoroughly shorn to have anything left for political purposes. A They must make this figh t against 4 great odds. But, unless every sign f ails, tbey will win it in spite of all the money and the power of Washing ton. It any. ot the ancient, spirit of the Old North State is left among them, they will show the hucksters who are trying to make merchandise of them that it is easier to sell a State than it is to deliver it. e believe the cash which is now pouring in to North Carolina will prove the worst in vestment of the year.. , ; ; I From the N. Y. Sun.J On the first of August the North Caro lina State election will - take place, when the people will have an opportunity to decide by their votes whether their in terests shall be confided to honest men or to the thieves who have plundered them so unmercifully in the past No one can doubt what the result would be with a fair election, and therefore Grant is filling th State with spies and miormers to termy the whites into support of his candidates under fear of a new Ku Klux crusade ; while the enormous sum of $223,000 has been taken from the publicitreasury and sent to the United States Marshal under the pretence of paying the expenses of his office formerly covered by $5X)0Q but in reality for the purpose ot corruptly influ-, encing votes in the interest of the Ad ministration. - These are significant facts for tax-payers to ponder, and they 1 are specially com mended to the attentionAof .original Re publicans, a ' ":" SPIRITS OF TUBPENTINE, Raleigh has va Band." - The NewJ flays unusually healthy, i.
