The Steam Engine Rankin.
We were shown, yesterday, one of the
flues taken front the steamer Rankin. It
was eaten through in several places by the
rust, which covered it to the depth of
a quarter of an inch. The other flues,
we learn. . are not in much better con
dition. As no salt water has been
used in the engine it is difficult to con
jecture why they should have so easily
rusted. . New flues have been ordered and
will be placed in the engine in a few days,
when she will be in better condition for
service than ever before.

The bridge across Black River, now in
I process of construction by Mr. R. G. Ross, '
of this city, will be completed in about two
weeks. - This bridge will connect the coun

no doubt be a great benefit to the trade of
this city, as it will materially facilitate the
transportation of the rich , products of the
Kaintuck and other sections to our market
We hear that it will be christened Black
Bridge, in compliment to Commissioner A.

the project is mainly due.

TEBBIBLE TRAGEDY. , ,
Fatal Affray between Two White Men
In Robeson County They are' Both
Killed. '
By the "Wilmington, Charlotte and Ruth
erford Railroad yesterday we have intelli
gence of a horrible tragedy that took place
in Robeson county on Tuesday evening last.
It ' seems that two white men named
Gilchrist . and. McClennan had some mis
understanding at a church a few Sundays
ago, during" which both parties became
very much exasperated. At the solicitation
of mutual friends, however, they agreed to
drop , the matter for the time being, lit
seems, though, that each had formed a de
termination to prepare for a future occa
sion and on the evening in' question they
encountered, t each other at or near the
residence of a Mrs. McCormick, not far
from, Lumberton.. , It appears from what we
can gather that they met on the road, when
Gilchrist drew his pistol and fired upon Mc
Clennan and then ran off,' followed quickly
hU advantage by dehberately walkmgnpto
the fallen man and firing7 three shots into
his head. He (McClennan) then turned off
and talked back towards the point where
he had dismounted from his mule when he
saw Gilchrist approaching, but before reach-
ing the animal he, fell dead in the "road.
Gilchrist lingered until yesterday morning,
when he also died.
