A meeting of the Wilmington Dra matic Association will be held on Wednes evening next, at 8 o'clock, for the purpose of making arrangements. for the approaching theatrical season. . - The clouds were somewhat threaten- ening yesterday, and there was some talk of the dreaded equinoctial being at hand, but up to this writing the elements have made no hostile demonstration. Alex. Lord, instead of Fred. "Lord, was the name of the colored boy arrested on Friday on suspicion of being implicated in some of the petty robberies which have oc curred recently. He has been released, there being no evidence against him. Nicholas Yopp, a young man employ ed in the Journal office, had his foot badly mashed by one of the. presses in that estab lishment yesterday afternoon. The wound was dressed, when the sufferer was taken home in a buggy by his father, Mr. Samuel L Yopp. Our cotemporary of the Newbern Journal of Commerce denies the statement, made a few days since by the .Timet of that city, to the effect that it (the Journal of Com merce, would be suspended on the 1st of October. It has no such idea, and we are glad to hear it A Remarkable Incident. . Dr. J. Francis King informed us yester day of one of the most remarkable freaks of the animal kingdom that .we have heard of in a long time. The Dr. has a fine milch cow, which has been astonishingly direlect in the matter of rendering her due quota of the lacteal fluid. In fact so remiss had she become in this respect, frequently not giv ing more than a half pint at a milking, that Dr. -K. was about to dispose of her to a butcher. Two or three days ago, however, one of the servants was witness to a trans action that solved the mystery. . The Dr. has a pet dog, and the servant discovered the animal in the act of sucking the teats of the cow, (she reclining on the grass in the yard at the time) just as a calf would have done, the cow in the meantime evin cing no annoyance, but rather indicating that she took it as a matter of course. Since then a watch has been kept on both the cow and dog by Dr. King and others of the family, which has led to the rather re markable discovery that the dog not only receives his daily subsistence from the cow, but that he follows her wherever she goes, even through the streets, she in the mean-, time showing every affection for this singu lar specimen of the canine species that would be natural if he were her own calf. . Ceanty Commissioners, The Board met yesterday in adjourned session: The Committee on Public Buildings re ported that they visited the County Jail on the 21st inst, and recommend the purchase of a good, substantial cook stove. ,The comfort and sanitary condition- of the premises demand that the jail be warm ed during the winter, and it is earnestly re commended that the Committee be author ized to ascertain the cost of so doing. i The Committee also recommend that the cost of other necessary repairs be ascer tained. - Tne v report - or the - ixmmittee was - -adopted. - The Board, was informed by the Chair man that the failure of the Sheriff elect to give satisfactory bond renders it necessary to elect a Sheriff to serve during the unex pired term. ;-(- - - , AdjourneM to meet again at 11 o'clock this morning. " ' Sadden Death. ; Obien S. Davis, a colored man, aged be tween 60 and 70 years, residing on Eighth, between Church and Castle streets, was found dead in his bed yesterday morning. At the dinner table on Sunday he fell from the chair in which he was sitting in a kind of fit, and during the balance of the day complained of feeling unwell, but his con dition was not such as to 'create any alarm. He retired to his room, at night and upon his not making his appearance at the usual hour yestercay morning-his room was en tered and he was' found perfectly dead. Transferred to Their Vessel. Wm. Thompson and John Brown, the two seamen belonging on the British Brig Medusa, who were arrested on Thursday last on the charge of desertion and have since been confined in the Guard House for safe keeping, were carried on board by a police officer yesterday, who continued to exercise his custody over them until the vessel had weighed anchor and proceeded on her voyage. The Clear, Case. A State warrant having been issued for Simon Taylor, the colored boy who stole the cigars from Capt J. L Wooster's drug store on Saturday night last, and who was arrested by a policeman and lodged in the Guard House, he was turned over to the proper officer yesterday and lodged in jail to await an examination, which will take place before Justice J.
