THE RESULT TESTEUDAy.
PENNSYLVANIA. ' "
The election of Hartranft, the can
didate of the Grant-Cameron' Ring,
seems to be conceded in Pennsylvania.
This result was foreshadowed several
days since when it was announced
that the city of Philadelphia had reg
istered ten thousand mora voters than
the great city of New York with its
third of a million more population.
With 800 Deputy United States Mar
shals around the polls, hundreds of
New York 'repeaters" headed by
"Iteddy the Blacksmith," and the mil
lions of dollars of public money under
the control of Simon Cameron, it is a
matter of no surprise that Philadelphia
has given a fraudulent majority that
must be flattering even , to such un
sullied patriots as Cameron, Hartranf t,
Yerkes and Mercer. Our telegrams
are very measrre, but the fact that
Cols. , Forney and McClure concede
the State to Hartranft is conclusive to
our mind. ...
onio.
, The returns from Ohio and Indiana
are very imperfect. "We have a re
ported Liberal majority of twenty-five
hundred in Cincinnati, which is a Lib
eral gain of several thousand on the
vote of previous years. Other returns
from a few precincts show small He
publican gains. The indications are
that the vote of Ohio will be close,
with chances in favor of the Liberals.
I . INDIANA.
Notwithstanding the imperfect re
turns from Indiana, we feel confident
that the gallant. Hendricks has car
ried the State by a decided majority,
although the unscrupulous Morton
5 gave all his energies to the task of,
indirectly, securing his own re-election.
;
) Nebraska.
Nebraska has gone Republican ; so
Mr. Hitchcock telegraphs Grant, and
we presume Mr. Hitchcock is right,
as nobody anticipated any other re
. suit. : v
THE VERY "LATEST.

nia will probably give Hartranft 20,

the Republican Committee, telegraphs
that Ohio is safe for 15,000 majority.
Niblack, (Dem.) of Indiana, is beaten
for Congress. Vote in Indiana very
close, with' chances in favor of the
Republicans. 'V- . ; -

A Resolute Son of Neptune He Said
He Wouldn't and He Wouldn't.
It will be remembered that when the
British Barque Madiuta was at this port two
of her men deserted and were at large for
several days. They were finally arrested,
however, and placed in the lock-up for
safe-keeping, where they remained until
the ship sailed, when they were taken on
board. They were very obstinate, their
confinement not having the effect to break
the spirit of insubordination which had be
fore characterized them, and they gave the
Captain a positive assurance that they
would not perform their customary duties
on the vessel - One of them, by the name
of Wm. Thompson, more desperate and
resolute tnan his companion, resolved to
leave the vessel at the first opportunity, and
on last Wednesday, .morning, about 4
o'clock, while the ship was lying at anchor
outside the bar, he jumped overboard and
swam ashore, a distance of about a mile
and a half, having taken one of the vessel's
spars to assist him in his efforts to effect
safe binding, which he accomplished after
having been in the water lour hours. He
subsequently started for this city, reaching
here on Saturday night last.
