The Chamber of Commerce met to-day in special meeting to receive a report of the Committee appointed to draft resolutions relative to the death of CoL Robert H. Cowan. Mr. Alfred Martin, Chairman, made the following report, which was unanimously adopted: " Death loves a shining mark!" Again the Great Leveler has invaded our commercial circle, and laid His relentless grasp upon one of our most distinguished members; one who, not only our own small circle, but the people of our whole loved commonwealth admired, loved and de lighted to honor. The personal friends and associates of CoL Rob't H. Cowan, and the public press, have left us little to say of his private char acter, public services and superior abilities. Yet we cannot permit one so greatly ad mired and so much loved to pass away from among us without spreading upon our minutes a record of our gratitude for his able, zealous and oft successful advocacy of all measures designed to advance the commercial interest of our community, our admiration of the character, both public and private, of our friend and companion, and our profound sense of the loss that wc have sustained by his death. Quick to perceive and to comprehend all things tending to the advancement of our commercial interests, he was ever their ready, able and vigorous advocate, as well before the public at large as in our Legisla tive halls, t No man was ever more sincerely and earnestly devoted to the interests of his friends and the welfare and prosperity of his State and his native city, or sacrificed his means, his time and his talents to the advancement of great and important meas ures of public utility more freely and more cheerfully. Appeals in such behalf weie never made in vain to him. In this, as in his social virtues, and in all things that go to make up the life of the good and great man. Col. Cowan has left us a noble ex- am rile: therefore be it Revolted. "That bv the death of Col. Rob't h. Cowan this Chamber has lost a wise l-uuubcuui, u mc uu .uuuUwu.v, and a zealous and faithful member. Resolved, That we will ever hold in grate ful remembrance his many valuable services as a member of this Chamber and a public representative of the interests of our com munity. . . Resolved, That to his afflicted family we tender the assurance of our deep and earn est sympathy in their bereavement Resolved further. That a memorial page of our journal be duly inscribed to our de ceased friend as a token of our high appre ciation Of his valuable services, and our love and admiration of bis many social irt his distinguished abilities, and his Hfe-long devotion to the interest of this, his native citv. Be U further resolved.
