Many absurd, groundless and slanderous
reports have been Industriously circulated
hy wicked, designing and unscrupulous per

management of the penitentiary, Most, '
not all, of these reports originated' with
malignant, disappointed applicants for office
in the penitentiary, who were rejected be-
cause they were considered incompetent to
discharge the duties of the . position for
which they applied, or those who,- through
a misapprehension of their true character,
on the part of the Board, obtained office, and
were subsequently elected for bad conduct.

would like to be considered gentlemen, have
made themselves active in reneatine these

That grand old specimen of Gothic archi
tecture, the city Market-house, still stands
in the centre of Market street, the pride and
glory of every appreciative Wilmingtonian,
and the admiration of every stranger who
gazes at its majestic proportions. And not
only is the building, the .great attraction of
modern times; but the location strikes every
beholder with a feeling bordering on adora
tion for the City Fathers who selected it, as
well as for' those who refuse now to permit
the ruthless hand of Progress to undo the
splendid work of the past
Long may this enduring monument of
municipal enterprise stand, a tribute to its
founders and a rebuke to 'that fanatical
spirit of progress which would mar the beau
ty of our great thoroughfare by robbing it
of its greatest attraction.
City Fathers of Wilmingtoni hearken not
to the siren voice of the destroyer. Let that
Market-house stand, if you would have fu
ture generations rise up and call you blessed.
In the language of "old Witt," " Wood

Ttae Grab-Game.
A case occurred on our streets yesterday
which should be a warning to our friends
from the rural districts to be careful what
sort of company they suffer themselves to
fall into when visiting the city and of the
all-important duty of keeping a sharp look
out for the safety of the hard-earned pro
ceeds of their labor from the clutches of
the sharpers who infest the community.
One of our country friends happened to be
passing on Second, between Market and
Dock streets, when he was halted by a col
ored individual, who pretended to be able
to. perform some astonishing trick and tried
to secure a bet from our friend on the
strengthof.it. Finally the sharper asked
the countryman for a chew of tobacco. The
latter, deciding to comply, with the request,
drew from his pocket, with his piece of to
bacco, a ten dollar greenback, which no
sooner saw the light than it was eagerly
snatched from his grasp by bis dusky com
panion, who bolted through an alley close
at hand and quickly disappeared. The
victim of this specimen of the grab-game
immediately put the police upon the alert,
but at last accounts the scoundrel had not
been captured.
The Kate Putnam Troupe
It will be seen by an advertisement in our

theatrical troupe will give a series of enter

Monday night nexti AWe have heretofore
referred to what the critics have said of her
admirable gifts and graces, and we now re
produce the following flattering notice from
the Richmond Enquirer: "Decidedly the
most pleasing and entertaining performance
we have witnessed in Richmond for a long
time, was given last night at Virginia Hall
by that little prodigy, Katie Putnam, and
her excellent troupe. ' She is the spright
liest, most intensely natural, and perfectly
artless little creature that has ever appeared
before a Richmond audience. Herf versa
