Judge Settle was elected to the Supreme Court Bench in 1868 which office he held until his resignition in the Spring of 1871. From the Raleigh JYews : The only excitement on the streets yesterday was the appearance of a Harnett county man mounted on a large red bull, saddled and '.'bridled as a horse." He stated that all the horses and mules in his neighbor hood had the epizoot, and he was com pelled to come to town. ' The Grand Masonic Lodge of this State, now in session in this city, says the Raleigh ifew, has resolved to convert St. John's College building, located at Ox ford, into a State Orphan Asylum. They give to the State the building for that pur pose,' and a donation in money, and request the Legislature to aid in the matter.: The Grand Lodge of the State, during ' its session this week, has so far amended an existing law concerning non affiliated Masons as to leave the matter with in the control of the several Lodges. Every Lodge will be required to examine into the case of all non-affiliated Masons within its jurisdiction, and if the said non-affiliatives do not connect themselves with the Lodge, or show sufficient reasons therefore, they shall be expelled by the said Lodge from all the rights of Masonry. From the Battleboro Advance : Albert Patterson, colored, was arrested last Thursday, on a charge of rape and ordered to jaiL When he arrived at Nashville wi der the charge of officer Bryant, he took leg bail and made his escape. In his flight he was shot by the officer and no doubt wounded as he dropped his blanket which was perforated in several places by bullets. - John ; D. Massey has been or dered to guage all the brandy in Nash coun ty south of Nashville. " Fat" Weaver has been ordered to guage all north, of Nash ville. Since the death of guager Williams in Nash county, from small-pox, "Fat" has become serious about obeying the orders of the Collector. " Should he be so active in his duties as to " catch it," he will deal a heap of it out He weighs 250 pounds. Says the Raleigh News : "We published yesterday, in the proceedings of the Circuit Court now in session in this city, the fact that the Court had made a decree in the suit against the North Carolina Rail road Company and the Public Treasury by Swasey and others, Plaintiffs. The decree ordered the distribution of $356,500, now in the hands of the Receiver, to the holders of the North Carolina bonds, issued to the North Carolina Railroad Company, being eighty per cent of the coupons due upon the bonds proved before the Commissioner appointed by the Court Legislature of Hurt! Referred. The Senate concurred in the proposition of the House to raise a select committee of five on the sale of the Western N. C. l Rail road.' ' ' .- ' Also, the House amendment to the Sen ate resolution authorizing the Secretary of State to send a special messenger: to cer tain counties for missing election returns. - The Senate also concurred in the ' House resolution instructing the committee on public buildings, grounds, etc., to exarnine and report on the condition of the Execu tive Mansion and other public-buildings; And refused to concur in the proposition to print the Governor's Message and ac companying documents In regard to the Centennial anniversary. - Mr. Norwood, in pursuance of his notice of veaterdav. moved that SO much of the 2rEor!s t'Sasariffi subject, and in doing so took occasion to " define his position" on that floor as a Senator. In the consideration of the momentous questions yet to come before the Legisla ture he could not believe that -party feeling would be permitted to interpose.. He al luded to the questions of constitutional amendment, education, agriculture and the State debt, and asked if, as legislators, they dared to look upon them with party spirit He alluded to tne manner in wnicn me State debt had been treated by the Gover nor in - his message, . and described it as "able and full of patriotic feeling," and thought the Legislature should be put in proper communication with the Executive on that subject" Mr. Norwood continued at some length on these considerations, and concluded by moving the reference of the portion of tne' message alluded to" to the committee. . 1. f ..-.' . Passed. On motion of Mr. Stanford,' the rules were suspended, and the bill to re-enact chapter 18. laws of 1870-71. was taken ud. This is the law in regard to the per diem of the uencral Assembly.' - j j Mr. Winslow offered a substitute allow- ing officers and members of the .General Assembly $3 per day and 10 cents mile age- Mr. Craige offered a proviso to the bill allowing clerks $6 per day, stating that this was in accordance with the old law, and the clerks were really entitled to double the pay of members.
