Robbtac m CUarela. The enterprising members of the Chris tian (colored Methodist) chapel, corner of Seventh and . Church r streets, recently pur chased a patent heater for their church at a cost of about $100. Arrangements had been made to place it in position and yes terday the work was to : have been accom plished; but' disappointment awaited them, for when the. workmen arrived - to do the job it was founil that during Friday night some thief had stolen the upper portion of the heater and carried it off, thus rendering it useless. ; Hanging would be too good for a villain that would perpetrate such an out rageous theft as this, and no efforts should be spared to bring the guilty party to justice Mortuary- Statistics. - From the annual report of the Secretary and Treasurer of Oakdale Cemetery, we obtain the following interesting facts: For the past six years there have been only 739 interments, as follows: 120 in 1867; 116 in 1868; 149 in 1869; 118 in 1870i 102 in 1871; and 134 in 1872.; This includes still-born infants and persons who-have died else where and been brought here for inter ment From this it will be seen that the largest number of deaths occurred in 1869 and the smallest in 1871. Martuto His Honor, Mayor Wil son, was laid before the Board of Alder men at their meeting on Friday night The question of an adequate protection . from the ravages of fire is an important one at this juncture and the suggestions of Mr.' Martin, who has given the matter much study, are worthy of consideration:. Wilmington, N. C, Jan. 20 1873. Eon. Jamc Wilson, Mayor. Dkab Sir: The recent disastrous fires in our city give warning that further pre ventatives must be provided. I have an idea which I think would 'make our fire department measurably perfect " ; 1st Procure 2,000 feet of best hose and distribute among the different steam en gines. : 2d. Purchase a Ttiver Steamer or Tue. place upon it a first-class force pump and one ' thousand or fifteen hundred feet of hose. ' Let the boat be kept in readiness to move from point to point. Two men would be sufficient to man and control it A small steamer with hose and fixtures would not cost more than a steam fire en gine and its equipment It would be able to move from any point to any other with ease, commanding on both sides of the river all the exposures within reach of the hose. An inexhaustible supply would be always at command. The boat would carry its own hose and be prepared to get to work at very short notice. Much of the valuable produce is stored outdoors and much exposed; it could always be reached. Millions of dollars of value might be saved in case of a great fire. The steamer could also be used to tow fiats and vessels out of danger. On the whole, after some deliberation. Fthink this plan is the best to thoroughly protect our water front These kind of steamers in London and New York are considered of very great value. , lours respectfully, ' Silas N. Maktct.
