The full amount of stock (500 shares) with which the corporators of the Real Estate and Loan Association proposed to commence operations, was subscribed with in twelve hours after books of subscription v.-erc regularly opened. As there are still : large number of persons, however, who desire to become stockholders, it has been decided to keep the books open until Frl day cvenineat7io'clock, at which time they will positively be closed. The popularity of the Real Estate and Ixan Association is clearly shown by the promptness with which the stock is being t.ken. Five hundred shares of stock in iliis Association . are equivalent to two '.honsa d shares in either the ' Wilming- ion" or the "Mechanics" Building Associa tion, if we consider that the monthly instal ments are four times as large; so the success of the new Association in securing subscrip tions to the extent of five hundred. shares in so short aj time is far greater than w as anticipated. We are glad to find that many of the young men of our city are taking from three o ten shares each in this popular enter prise; and ii i to this chiss of our peo ple especially that vc recommend it. They will find U a profitable investment, we feel MtMiired, whether viewed as a Savings Bank 'r in its other admirable aspects. ' I'ps and Downs. Persons having cellar doors opening on the street should keep tlie covering in good repair, as on a crowded sidewalk it some times becomes necessary to tcp on them. This w as 1 lie case yesterday morning, on Front street, near tlie corner of Market, when the individual who tried tho experi ment instantly found one foot on the pave ment and tlie other about three or four feet below on the floor of the cellar, to the im minent danger of breaking his neck or of dividing his body into two parts like an 'tpple. Tlie causeof this wasadecayed and rickety covering. . 1 Cool Bati. We learn that one of our prominent Water street friends had the misfortune to tumble overboard near the corner of Dock and Water streets yesterday morning. It is reported, however, that he didn't re main in the water any longer than was absolutely necessary, which shows that he was "sensible to the last" V ' ! f. Sylvester Artis, charged with attempting to break into a house, was sentenced to pay a fine of $15 or go to the Work House for 30 days. James Striddick, charged with breaking into a house, was found not guilty and dis charged. Martha Danials, charged with damaging a fence, was required to pay a fine of $5 A Newspaper Reporter Makes a Bal loon Ascension. The Sunday Chronicle of San Francisco, California, gives an interesting account of a recent balloon ascension at that place by . . . y . , his serial flight by a Chronicle reporter in the person of Mr. W. W. Davis, formerly of this city and a son of our fellow citizen. Dr. W. W. Da vis. The balloon went to the height of about 4.000 feet, and the ascension was a very exciting but successful onc, affording our young friend ample material for an excellent item, which was used to advan tage. On the Patn. Tuesday night, about 8 o'clock, as Mr. J. H. Mann, who runs the lightwood factory for Messrs. Marks, Smith & Co., was pass ing the corner of Mulberry and North Water streets, he was accosted by a colored man who followed him up and endeavored to force him into onc of the low dens in that neighborhood, evidently with the in tention of robbing him. Luckily, he had a heavy cane in his hand, and, by indicating his purpose to use it if further molested, he finally succeeded in convincing the fellow tliat he had better try some other scheme to " raise the wind." Their Names. Ussery, Thompson and McDonald are the names of the three men arrested and lodged in Rockingham jail on the charge of implication in the murder of Jim Wooten, alluded to by us a few days since. At Lewis was the name of the prisoner who escaped from the train. The Bobetonian says Jim was in the habit otgetting drunk, and while in that condition, was very quar relsome and overbearing, and that paper is inclined to think that bis deatli is directly chargeable to whiskey Enthusiastic Meeting. Last evening we called at the City Hal and looked in for a moment on the assem bled wisdom of the Republican party. Col. Josephus Constable Hill was expiating in a subdued manner to about a baker's dozen of the unkidnapped "fire-tried," while Marshal Canaday, like "one who treads alone some banquet hall deserted," walked to and fro in the passageway,1 evidently meditating on the uncertainties of politica enthusiasm. No Lecture Last Night The anticipated lecture from Hon. S. S, Cox, of New York, which was to have been delivered at the rooms of tho Young Men's Christian Association last night, did not take place. The cause of this disappoint ment was the failure of the trains to make connection, in eonsequence of which he was unable to reach here in time. Our cit izens missed a rich treat in not being able to hear this distinguished gentleman. There will be a dearth of amusements for a few weeks, unless some of our ama teurs take a notion to "give us a lift" in that direction. The next engagement at the Opera House, as it now standB, is for the 9th and 10th of April, when CaL Wagner's Minstrel Troupe will appear here. WILMINGTON, Local Dots. Capt Phillips, of the River and Bar mprovement, reports that the space be tween Zeke's Island and Smith's Island has been tilled up and parties passed over from one island to the other on dry land for the first time on Saturday last. A Good Thing. K Through the enterprise of several gentle men of this cit', a new road to Masonboro Sound, shortening the distance by about a mile and a half, has been surveyed and laid out. The necessary funds have been se cured by private subscription arid the work of its construction will be commenced im mediately. It promises to be a great im provement over the old roads in several re spects. Highway Robberies. Highway robberies aro becoming alarm ingly frequent here and it behooves our citizens to be prepared for emergencies. No less than three are reported to have oc curred on Tuesday night. There are two or three competent detectives in the city and the authorities would do well to em ploy them to ferret out these midnight marauders and bring them to justice. Water Works. Mr. R. D. Guerard, Engineer of the Sa vannah Water Works, is here on a brief visit. In company with several of our citi zens he took a view of the surroundings yesterday, and we learn that he expresses the opinion that the proposed Waterworks in this city can be constructed at a moderate cost Mr. Guerard is stopping at the Pur cell House. Filler's Veg etable Rheumatic Syrup, the scientific discovery of J. P. Fitlcr, M. D., a regular gradual n physician, with whom we are personally acquainted, who has for 89 years treated these diseases exclu sively with astonishing results. We believe it our christian duty, after deliberation, to conscientiously request sufferers to use it, especially persons in mod erate circumstances who cannot afford to waste tnoneyland time on worthless mixtures. As clergy men we seriously feel the deep responsibility resting on us in publicly endorsing this medicine. But our knowledge and experience of its remarkable merit fully justifies our action. Rev. C.
