"N. Maffltt, late the intrepid commander of the world-famous Confederate cruiser, Florida. ; ' Capt Maffltt's modest disclaimer of all pretention to skill IiUhe field of the lecturer constituted a handsome and' graceful intW ductory and gave his auditors ample earnest of the.agrecable entertainment in store for them. Beginning with a jaunty readiness and directness of treatment, characteristic of the true seaman, when he essays narra tion with the pen, the lecture was through out a sustained effort of remarkable clear ness and epic power. . ... The gems of CapL Maffltt's experience as a naval commander in the Confederate' service, during his brilliant and almost un exampled career, when he was tho .' terror of the; seas"' for all Federal craft, .were given in rich prof usion, and with a perspi cuity of narrative, and beauty of diction, which'Ieft nothing to be'desired as to the literary features of the performance. The lecturer did not adhere to , a strict chrono logical unity of treatment and hence the lecture was lite a bouquet more admirable for the variety- of its resplendent hues, rthan for studied uniformity of color and arrangement. , , j j , In his rapid Bummary of incidents occur ing during the era of Secession, Capt. llaffitt judiciously eschewed political discussion, yet gave an appropriate statement of im portant historical facts as viewed .from the Southern outlook. The necessity of blockade-running as an auxiliary to the inade quate industries and resources of the South in her .Titanic ! struggle "with Vher opulent adversary, to -whom the markets of the world were open, was explained a state ment both accurate and interesting. JThe explanation of . blockade-running as a sys tem was exceedingly clear and forcible,- and this portion of the lecture gave valuable in formation pertaining to the issues of the late war in phases which they assumed out side the arena of actual hostilities.' ' : ; ' v In the delineatten of incidents in his own career as a blocsade-runner in tne con federate service, Capt. ' Mafflt's pen has found a most felicitous field, and in many of his descriptive passages ho gives evi dence of very unusual pictorial power. His various successful attempts to elude the vigilance of the blockading squadron guard ing the approaches to Wilmington, were sketched in a manner in the highest degree picturesque and thrilling. 1 : - The circumstances of the lecturer's con- nectlon with the Florida, the difficulties in cidental to her equipment, and her final-departure for a field of conquest which should be co-extensive with the boundless ocean, constituted a most interesting feature of the lecture, and Capt Maffitt dwelt, with pathetic and eloquent mention, upon the exploits of the " bonnie craft" which sent .to " Davy Jones' Locker many a richly-laden North man, bearing supplies and luxuries to those who were then our enemies. . .,. Possibly, excepting, one or two similar passages, the chief gem of the lecture was the admirable' piece of word-painting with which Capt. Mafflt detailed the entrance of the Florida into Mobile harbor, and her sub sequent escape from that port. These in cidents were given in the very finest style of pictorial art. In detailing the success ful evasion of the vigilance of the blockading squadron off 'Mobile, Capt Maffltt took occasion to make a handsome vindication of Capt Preble, a Federal commander,, who was unjustly charged with, criminal neglect of dut!y in permitting the , escape - of the Florida. Capt Maffitt t mentioned the fact that a few months since, he gave testimony in a naval court which had the case of Cap tain Preble under consideration, and last evening he was especially earnest and em phatic in his vindication Of a- meritorious officer who had been unjustly assailed. ; At the close of the lecture Capt Maffitt receivers hearJestimonial of the delight with which hia audience had listened to his admirable effort : JL? i " r "'."
