Wade Hampton, yesterday morning, dated 'at "Weldon, in which he stated that he missed connection at that place and would therefore not be able to reach here in time to deliver his promised leeture that evening. A colored boy, about sixteen years of ge, by the name of Jim Parker, met with, a fatal accident on the Wilmington, Char-, lotte and Kutlieriord , Railroad Thursday evening. In the discussion which followed, Mr. McLeod suggested that the Pensacola, Pas-' cagoola and other lumber' exchanges that have been and may be formed should merge uiemaeiTea mio. uus ponmeni ftHnoriauonr; and that there should be but thhi one asso ciation for the South. , , . , , Mr. Colquitt occupied a different position from the broad ground assumed by Mr. Mc Leod, and submitted that local organizations should be organized, maintained and en couraged, looking especially -to local in terests and distinct from this general asso ciation in which they, should all be united, and to which should be referred those mat ters of general interest and general bearing upon the lumber and timber manufacturers and commerce of the section which alike affected all bur manufacturers and shippers. Local (exchanges and organizations- were necessary to regulate and govern. certain en tirely local qnestions, while the Southern Manufacturers' and Shippers'. Association was alike demanded by the lumber interests of the whole South to promoter protect and harmonize questions such.as classifications, inspections and insurance, that related to the general: concern. of all capitalists and others engaged in the Southern lumber and timber trade. It was therefore unanimously resolved that the Mayor be instructed to contract with Mr. Lanehan for a stone bridge on the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad on Fourth street, to be of the width of fifty ' f eef and not to exceed in cost $12,000. 1 '"- A communication asking that so much of the bite resolution of the Board in regard to the Fire Department of the city as may re fer to running the' hose carriages 'on the sidewalks of the streets of the city be re voked, was not granted. The tax bill for the present year was passed with the following amendments: In section 4, the tax on real estate and personal prop erty was made payable on and after June 15th. In section 5, the Tax Collector is au thorized to commence collecting taxes, by distress, on and after August 2d, instead of September 2nd, as heretofore provided In the license tax, Banks are exempt . The tax on Express Companies remains as be fore, but private parties acting as Express Companies will bo required to pay ten dol lars per: month. All persons whose busi ness it is to sell prize candies, photosraphs. pictures, jewelry, or any other article with which a prize is offered as an inducement to purchasers to buy any such article, shall pay a tax of twenty dollars per month."
