Particulars of the Affalr-The Canw The Seene of the Duel The Awful Result. i-:;- p. . . New Orleans, July 1. Thft Evening Herald has the fol lowing particulars of the duel; " For several aays past this community has beeu much excited by the apprehen sions of a duel between . Col. K. B. Rhett, Jr., the editor of the JPicayurie and J udge Wm, H. Cooler, the lead ing counsel in the case of Hawkins vs. ' the Pieayiine. On Friday Colonel Rhett sent a peremptory challenge to J udge Cooley, which was accepted. The meeting, however, was agreed to be postponed until Thursday on ac count of Judge Cooley's engagements to argue the rule for a new trial be fore J udge Hawkins, Tvhich came ur . a j t . -r yeaieraay, inuring the , course of the argument Judge Cooley, opposing the motion for a continuance remark ed that if the case went on till Wednes day he might not be alive to argue it. And so it sadly turned out. The parties left in the Mobile train &t 8 o'clock this morning, . arriving at Montgomery :; Station about : 10 o'clock: where ; the nartv ; (mt. nff Montgomery Statiou where the duef occurred is I a" wild sandy looking .. place, some four or five miles; this side of - Bay- St. Louis, where 1 the road passes; , through i a wood of tall pines, behind which is an opea field. Xear by and on the Iin of tTiA railroad is a small cottage, occupied by a family, but, with this exception there are no residents nearer than three quarters of a mile. . This diffi culty is one! of the sad results of the iniquitous Hawkins suit against the Picayune, of which Colonel lib ett is tne eaitor. in his speech i for the prosecution : Judge Cooley made reflections upon .that, paper .which called forth the editorial in the next issue of . the Picayune pronouncing them false." 'Judge Cooley then ad ; dressed a communication to the edi tor calling for explanations, which not being accorded, he followed " it up by publishing a card .' assailing Colonel Rhett. A challenge prompt ly followed, and ' the result is now before our readers. - This is not the nrst duel in whirh JnArra f!rtl - . 5" wvr, jr uao been concerned. Some years before the war he met Dr. Kaufman one of his parishioners, upon the field i of honor, and after an exchange of shots an amicable adjustment of ; the diffi culty was made,; and thereafter the parties became; warm friends. The body was brought to , the city this evening, and was left at the Luze berg Hospital: '..The funeral will take place to-morrow. " - : -VliOR I 1 0 1..' ' m VOL. XII.--NO. 88. -.
